Inleiding
Herenhuis in Art Nouveau-stijl, 1905, gebouwd naar een ontwerp van architect J. Hollmann uit Maastricht, in opdracht van J. Wijnands. Het pand is gesitueerd in de gesloten wand van de Papenstraat.
Omschrijving
Het dubbel herenhuis heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond, telt drie bouwlagen en wordt afgedekt met zadeldaken met shingles. Twee topgevelachtige dakkapellen met zandstenen bekroningen.
Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is baksteen, hardsteen en zandsteen.
Rechthoekige houten deuren met segmentboogvormig bovenlicht. In de eerste bouwlaag rechthoekige houten vensters met segmentboogvormige bovenlichten met een verticale geleding. In de tweede bouwlaag van elk pand een groot rondboogvormig venster dat in drieën wordt gedeeld door een tweetal hardstenen penanten. In de derde bouwlaag rechthoekige houten vensters en balkondeuren met bovenlichten met resp. een acht- en twaalfruits verdeling. Hardstenen dorpelstenen en vlakke zandstenen sierbanden. Smeedijzeren muurankers.
Twee voormalige herenhuizen met nagenoeg identieke gevels: beide panden tellen drie bouwlagen en drie vensterassen.
Pand 4 C: plint in natuursteen in wild verband met daarboven een band hardsteen. Omlijsting segmentbogen van de bovenlichten in baksteen.
Tweede bouwlaag: een balkon over de geheele breedte, met smeedijzeren balustrade en rustend op consoles. Een grote rondboog, in drieën gedeeld door twee hardstenen penanten met hierin geometrische en florale motieven in Art-Nouveau stijl.
Derde bouwlaag: een balkon in de middelste vensteras met smeedijzeren balustrade en rustend op consoles. Vensters onder segmentbogen waarbij het centrale boogveld gevuld is met een floraal motief in pleisterwerk.
Aan de achtergevel een uitbouw in twee bouwlagen met een plat dak en een uitbouw in een bouwlaag eveneens met een plat dak.
Het pand 4 B is vrijwel identiek heeft echter in de tweede bouwlaag een houten erker van recentere datum met plat dak met hierop een restant van een houten balustrade.
Aan de achtergevel een uitbouw in twee bouwlagen met een plat dak en een uitbouw in een bouwlaag eveneens met plat dak.
Indeling INTERIEUR van beide panden redelijk intact, overigens niet beschermenswaardig.
Waardering
Het dubbel herenhuis is van architectuurhistorische waarde wegens het belang voor de bovenregionale geschiedenis van de architectuur, als voorbeeld van het oeuvre van de architect J. Hollmann, wegens de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek. Het pand bezit ensemblewaarde als onderdeel van het beschermd stadsgezicht Maastricht en is van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van de stad. Het pand is tenslotte van algemeen belang wegens de grote mate van architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur en de architectuurhistorische zeldzaamheid.

Property 4 B is virtually identical but has in the second storey a wooden bay of recent date with flat roof with on it a remnant of a wooden balustrade.

The double town house is of architectural-historical value because of its significance for the supra-regional history of architecture, as an example of the oeuvre of architect J. The property has ensemble value as part of the protected city view Maastricht and is of particular significance for the appearance of the city. The property is finally of general importance because of the high degree of architectural integrity of the exterior and the architectural-historical rarity.
