Inleiding
WOONHUIS in de gesloten wand van de Herbenusstraat, 1904-1905.
Eclectische bouwstijl met diverse elementen van Jugendstil. Gebouwd in opdracht van J.B.H. Klijnen, naar ontwerp van de Maastrichtse architect A. Deussen, tegelijkertijd met de panden 130a-b en 132. De aangebouwde serre, in de oksel van achtergevel en uitbouw onder plat, is uitgesloten van bescherming.
Omschrijving
Woonhuis met souterrain, twee bouwlagen en zolderverdieping plus een uitbouw van twee bouwlagen onder plat dwars op de achtergevel. Het hoofdvolume wordt gedekt door een samengesteld mansarde- en zadeldak verzonken tussen kopgevels, gedekt met muldenpannen. Bakgoten op klossen. Twee dakkapellen met klauwstukken, rechthoekige houten T-vensters met verticaal ingedeelde bovenlichten.
Zeer rijk geornamenteerde asymmetrische voorgevel met twee vensterassen. Boogfries tussen de eerste en tweede bouwlaag. Verticale gevelgeleding met behulp van lisenen en venstertraceringen. Een boogfries onder de dakrand. Geprofileerde plint in imitatierustica, souterrainvensters met rooster. Rode bakstenen optrek. Lichtrode, geglazuurde profiellijsten.
Lisenen met lichtrode profielen, uitlopend in boogfriezen met zandstenen sluitsteen. Gele zandstenen speklagen, aanzetten, traceringen en sluitstenen. Groen geglazuurde speklagen in booglijsten, gele bakstenen bogen.
Verdiepte boogvelden met siervlechtwerk, meerkleurig. Geornamenteerde hardstenen dorpels op consoles. Vensters met zeer karakteristieke bovenlichtindeling. Spits uitlopende lisenen op consoles, voorzien van composietkapitelen.
Paneeldeur, waarvan het smeedijzeren rooster is verwijderd, met hoefijzervormig bovenlicht inclusief kleine roedeverdeling. Achtergevel in grauwbruine baksteen, gemetseld in kruisverband. Hardstenen dorpels.
Vensterstrekken. De achtergevel van de uitbouw is voorzien van twee vensterassen, waarin vier segmentboogvormige houten T-vensters met drieruits bovenlicht. De zijgevel van de uitbouw is blind met uitzondering van een rechthoekig houten bovenlicht. Boven de aangebouwde serre bevindt zich een segmentboogvormig dubbel houten kruiskozijn.
De achtertuin wordt omgeven door een bakstenen muur.
In het INTERIEUR, waarvan de indeling intact is, bevinden zich onder meer de volgende waardevolle onderdelen: marmeren en houten haardlijsten, stucplafonds met lijsten, plavuizenvloeren in gang en keuken, trappenhuisbalustrade, gangbogen met composietkapitelen in de consoles, paneeldeuren in lijsten, zwenkdeuren tussen de kamers-en-suite.
Waardering
Het woonhuis is van architectuurhistorisch belang vanwege de bouwstijl, vanwege de betrokkenheid van architect Deussen, vanwege de hoogwaardigeesthetische kwaliteit, het bijzondere materiaalgebruik, de ornamentiek en de bijzondere samenhang tussen exterieur en interieuronderdelen.
Het woonhuis is gesitueerd in het Maastrichtse singelgebied en als zodanig verbonden met de uitbreiding en het aanzien van de stad.

Dwelling house with basement, two storeys and attic storey plus an extension of two storeys under flat roof transverse to the rear facade. The main volume is covered by a composite mansard and gabled roof sunken between gable ends, covered with pantiles. Gutters on brackets. Two roof dormers with claw pieces, rectangular wooden T-windows with vertically divided fanlights.
Very richly ornamented asymmetrical front facade with two window axes. Arch frieze between the first and second storey. Vertical facade articulation by means of pilasters and window tracery. An arch frieze under the eaves. Profiled plinth in imitation rustication, basement windows with grille. Red brick elevations. Light red, glazed profile mouldings.
Pilasters with light red profiles, terminating in arch friezes with sandstone keystones. Yellow sandstone courses, arises, tracery and keystones. Green glazed courses in arch mouldings, yellow brick arches.
Recessed arched fields with decorative brickwork, multicoloured. Ornamented stone sills on corbels. Windows with very characteristic fanlight division. Pointed pilasters on corbels, provided with composite capitals.
Panel door, of which the wrought-iron grille has been removed, with horseshoe-shaped fanlight including small glazing bars. Rear facade in grey-brown brick, laid in English bond. Stone sills.
Window stretches. The rear facade of the extension is provided with two window axes, containing four segment-arch-shaped wooden T-windows with three-light fanlights. The side facade of the extension is blind with the exception of a rectangular wooden fanlight. Above the attached conservatory is a segment-arch-shaped double wooden cross window.
The rear garden is surrounded by a brick wall.
In the INTERIOR, of which the layout is intact, are found among others the following valuable components: marble and wooden fireplace surrounds, stucco ceilings with mouldings, tile floors in hallway and kitchen, staircase balustrade, hallway arches with composite capitals in the corbels, panel doors in mouldings, swing doors between the rooms-en-suite.
