Inleiding Oudst bekende LOURDESGROT in Nederland, met bidkapel, 1880. Gebouwd in opdracht van de familie Claerenboets en gesitueerd in de voortuin vanhun toenmalige woonhuis, de Villa Maaszicht.
Omschrijving
Lourdesgrot met bidkapel, gebouwd aan de binnenzijde van de gepleisterde mergelmuur van de Villa Maaszicht. De kapel is toegankelijk via een rondboogvormige ijzeren deur in deze muur. De kapel heeft een bouwlaag onder plat dak, is opgetrokken in baksteen, gemetseld in kruisverband en voorzien van lisenen en muizetanddecoraties. Spitboogvensters met gekleurd glas. Buitennis. Het interieur van de kapel is gepleisterd en voorzien van imitatievoegen en Florentijnse bogen. Via een dubbel smeedijzeren hekwerk is de Lourdesgrot bereikbaar, opgetrokken in uit de naburige mergelgroeve gedolven vuursteenkeien. De tuinmuur is tussen de Lourdesgrot en de bidkapel bedekt met witmarmeren ex voto-plaquettes.
Waardering
De Lourdesgrot met bidkapel is van zeer grote cultuurhistorische waarde, als specimen van een geestelijke en typologische ontwikkeling en vanwege het pionierskarakter van de grot. De architectuurhistorische waarden worden bepaald door het gebruik van streekgebonden bouwmateriaal. Grot en kapel zijn in hoge mate gaaf en beschikken bovendien over een zeer grote typologische en functionele zeldzaamheidswaarde.

Description
Lourdes grotto with prayer chapel, built on the inner side of the plastered marl wall of the Villa Maaszicht. The chapel is accessible via a rounded arch-shaped iron door in this wall. The chapel has one storey under a flat roof, is constructed in brick, laid in English bond and provided with pilasters and dentil moulding. Pointed arch windows with coloured glass. Exterior niche. The interior of the chapel is plastered and provided with imitation mortar joints and Florentine arches. Via double wrought-iron railings the Lourdes grotto is accessible, constructed from flint stones quarried from the nearby marl quarry. The garden wall between the Lourdes grotto and the prayer chapel is covered with white marble ex voto plaques.
Valuation
The Lourdes grotto with prayer chapel is of very great cultural historical value, as a specimen of a spiritual and typological development and because of the pioneering character of the grotto. The architectural historical values are determined by the use of regional building materials. Grotto and chapel are in a high degree intact and moreover have a very great typological and functional rarity value.
