Inleiding
POSTKANTOOR met voormalig POLITIEBUREAU, ca. 1890, in neo-renaissance stijl. Dominant gesitueerd op de hoek van Stationsstraat en de Lage Barakken. De aangebouwde veranda en de fietsenstalling op de binnenplaats zijn uitgesloten van bescherming.
Omschrijving
Het gecombineerde postkantoor-politiebureau heeft een souterrainverdieping, twee cq drie bouwlagen plus een mansardeverdieping op een ongelijkmatige U-vormige plattegrond met afgeschuinde hoekpartij. Het geheel is gesitueerd rondom een binnenplaats en wordt gedekt door een afgeplat mansardedak, waarvan de dakschilden zijn voorzien van leien in schubdekking. Dakkapellen met verticaal ingedeelde houten zesruits vensters op de dakschilden aan de Lage Barakken. Het aangebouwde cellenblok annex trafohuis dwars op de achtergevel van het bouwvolume aan de Lage Barakken telt twee bouwlagen onder een plat dak.
De bakstenen gevels zijn opgetrokken op een geprofileerde hardstenen plint met souterrainroosters. Hardstenen speklagen, venstertraceringen, aanzet- en sluitstenen, boogfriesconsoles. Sierankers. Yezeria in een drietal venstervulstukken van de eerste bouwlaag.
Het postkantoor is gesitueerd op de straathoek en kenmerkt zich door drie bouwlagen plus een licht risalerende, afgeschuinde hoekpartij. De gevel aan de Stationsstraat heeft één vensteras en loopt uit in een trapgevel. In elke bouwlaag driegewijs gekoppelde vensters: in de eerste bouwlaag een rechthoekig houten T-venster met achtruits bovenlicht, rechthoekige houten zijlichten met vierruits bovenlichten geplaatst in een segmentboogvormige lijst met hardstenen traceringen, hardstenen aanzet- en sluitstenen in de strekboog. Yezeriavulstuk met afbeelding van het door leeuwen gedragen Nederlandse wapenschild met onderschrift "je maintiendrai". In de tweede en derde bouwlaag driegewijs gekoppelde vensters, elk met een eigen segmentboog: centraal geplaatste rechthoekige houten T-vensters met achtruits bovenlichten, zijvensters met vier- c.q. zesruits bovenlichten. In de topgevel twee gekoppelde, rechthoekige houten vensters met horizontale indeling, waartussen een hardstenen tracering.
De afgeschuinde, risalerende hoekpartij is in de eerste laag voorzien van een rechthoekige, dubbele houten paneeldeur met smeedrooster en twaalfruits bovenlicht. Aan weerszijden van de entree rechthoekige houten portaalvensters met vierruits bovenlicht in een lijst met horizontale hardstenen tracering en frontonbekroning. Boven de entree, in de tweede en derde bouwlaag, een houten erker met balkon op hardstenen vloer met zware consoles. In de derde laag rechthoekige, dubbele houten balkondeuren en bovenlicht. Topgevel met ronde hoekpilasters op geornamenteerde hardstenen consoles, afgeplatte toren met dakkapellen voorzien van leien en smeedpion, rondom geprofileerde daklijst op houten consoles.
De gevel aan de Lage Barakken telt twee vensterassen. In de eerste as een rechthoekige paneeldeur met smeedrooster en een zesruits bovenlicht in een hardstenen lijst met frontonbekroning. Boven de entreedeur een reeks met drie trappenhuisvensters: twee gekoppelde vensters met hardstenen kruisgeleding in een segmentbooglijst, tweemaal twee gekoppelde achtruits vensters met T-vormige hardstenen traceringen in een segmentbooglijst of elk voorzien van een segmentboog. In de tweede vensteras driemaal driegewijs gekoppelde vensters: één rechthoekig houten T-venster met achtruits bovenlicht en rechthoekige zijlichten met vierruits bovenlichten. In de eerste bouwlaag een segmentboogvormige lijst met yezeriavulstuk, voorzien van een afbeelding van de Maastrichtse stadsengel met wapenschild. De vensters van de tweede en derde laag hebben elk een segmentboog. De tweede vensteras loopt uit in een trapgevel met een rechthoekig, ongeleed houten venster.
Het voormalige politiebureau was ondergebracht in het aangrenzende bouwvolume van twee lagen aan de Lage Barakken. Vrijwel symmetrisch ingedeeld gevel met drie vensterassen. In de eerste laag van de middenas geplaatste, driegewijs gekoppelde vensters, in een segmentbooglijst met hardstenen tracering en een yezeriavulstuk met een afbeelding van een politieagent, een hangslot met ketting en twee zwaarden. In de tweede laag zijn de gekoppelde vensters elk voorzien van een drukboog. Zowel in de eerste als de tweede bouwlaag rechthoekige houten T-vensters met achtruits bovenlichten, zijvensters met vierruits bovenlicht. De middenas wordt bekroond door een trapgevel, waarin twee gekoppelde zesruits vensters met een T-vormige hardstenen tracering. In de flankerende assen een rechthoekige enkelvoudige c.q. dubbele houten paneeldeur met smeedrooster en vierruits bovenlichten in een hardstenen lijst met fronton; daarboven rechthoekige houten (T-)vensters met zes- en achtruits bovenlichten.
Achtergevels met segmentboogvormige vensters in diverse geledingsvormen, strekken. Segmentboogvormige dubbele houten binnenplaatsdeuren. In het voormalige cellenblok drie rechthoekige houten zestienruits vensters, plus een dubbele houten deur met vierruits bovenlicht.
In het INTERIEUR, waarvan de indeling op de begane grond is aangepast, bevinden zich geen beschermde onderdelen.
Waardering
Het postkantoor annex politiebureau aan de Stationsstraat is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een bestuurlijke en typologische ontwikkeling. De architectuurhistorische waarden worden bepaald door de bouwstijl, de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, het materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek. Het pand is een zeer belangrijk onderdeel van het stadsdeel op de oostelijke Maasoever, is vanwege de situering ten zeerste verbonden met de ontwikkeling van de stad en van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van de stad. Het pand is in hoge mate gaaf en van zeer groot belang voor de structurele en visuele gaafheid van de stedelijke omgeving. The combined post office-police station has a basement storey, two or three storeys plus a mansard storey on an irregular U-shaped ground plan with bevelled corner section. The whole is situated around a courtyard and is covered by a flattened mansard roof, the roof slopes of which are provided with slates in overlapping courses. Dormer windows with vertically divided wooden six-pane windows on the roof slopes facing the Lage Barakken. The attached cell block adjoining transformer house across the rear facade of the building volume facing the Lage Barakken has two storeys under a flat roof.
The brick facades are built on a profiled ashlar plinth with basement grilles. Ashlar specklayers, window traceries, springer and keystones, arch frieze consoles. Ornamental wall anchors. Majolica in three window-fill pieces of the first storey.
