Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
SACRISTY, PAROCHIAL HOUSE and PLANT HOUSE, 1933, built against the northern aisle of the nationally protected St.Martinuskerk on the Rechtstraat. Design in functional expressionist style by architect Alphons Boosten, commissioned by the R.K. Church Council St.Martinus in Wyck-Maastricht. The glass roof of the plant house has since been replaced by a slate roof and the house is used as a garage.
Description
The parochial house has a basement, three storeys plus an attic storey on a more or less rectangular ground plan. The whole lies in a transverse direction to the Oeverwal and is covered by a gabled roof with slate, including gutter rails. On the east facade a risalit with stairwell under an asymmetrical gabled roof with flat section. Built against the stairwell risalit an attached plant house of one storey under a bent, originally glazed lean-to roof with gutter rail, facing south. In the angle between parochial house and plant house an entrance section, beneath which a basement entrance.
The whole is constructed in brickwork, laid in running bond. Continuous moulding with sawtooth ornaments beneath the gutter rail. In the west, north and east facades separated by brick tracery, horizontally divided rectangular wooden window series, unglazed red windowsill mouldings.
Decorative brickwork in block bond above these windows. In the plinth of the northern side facade profiled horizontal mouldings between the basement windows. The stairwell risalit on the east facade has a protruding facade facing north with horizontally divided rectangular wooden windows, crowned by a wooden column carrying the flat roof section.
Window series beneath the overhangs of the stairwell risalit.
The balustrade of the eastern entrance section is provided with decorative brickwork in block bond. Basement entrance beneath canopy on corbels. Window reveals. Gable apex interlacing.
The former plant house, with various old gravestones against the blind north facade, has a narrowed, pointed-arch-shaped, double wooden access door due to the continuous plinth. Asymmetrical stepped gable. Profiled plinth with unglazed red moulding. The broken lean-to roof with slate runs through to a window series placed above the plinth. This plinth is supported by two small bears with unglazed red covering.
The INTERIOR layout of sacristy, parochial house and plant house is virtually unchanged. On the ground floor the sacristy was originally fitted out. This space is now used as a prayer chapel. Notably present here are the stained-glass windows, signed "Jerome, 1946" and a holy water stoup designed by architect Boosten. Simple but characteristic staircase. Above the prayer chapel is the parochial house 't Hiemelke.
Appreciation
The extension of the St.Martinuskerk with a sacristy, parochial house and plant house is of cultural-historical value as a particularly fine specimen of a cultural, spiritual, social and typological development.
The architectural-historical values are determined by the expressionist building style, the involvement of architect Alphons Boosten, the aesthetic qualities of his design, the use of materials and the ornamentation.
This concerns the protection of an otherwise nationally protected church, situated in the protected city townscape Maastricht. The building is, owing to its location, connected with the development of the Wyck quarter and is of particular significance for the appearance of the city.
The building is important because of its architectural integrity.
Moreover, there is a question of architectural-historical and typological rarity.
