Introduction

The former teacher training school is semi-detached, situated in the line of the Capucijnenstraat.

At right angles to the rear facade is a school building of older date with a recent extension. These buildings are excluded from protection.

Description

The former teacher training school has a rectangular floor plan placed in the longitudinal direction, comprises three storeys and a basement storey and is covered with a flat roof consisting of a concrete slab with overhang. On this roof a small structure in one storey as closure of the stairwell. This structure provided with a flat concrete roof with broad overhang resting on steel columns. On the flat roof the continuous chimney flue provided with a horizontal closure. The roof is interrupted on the front facade side by the slightly higher continuous central section of the front facade. The building materials used are Kunrader stone, concrete, steel and basalt.

Rectangular plastic windows in a wooden frame, coupled and provided with horizontal three-pane glazing. Rectangular plastic ungla zed windows. All mentioned windows project slightly with the facade. Stairwell with rectangular steel window with twenty-seven-pane glazing bars, filled with leaded glass by Hub. Levigne. Rectangular double wooden entrance door in portico.

Semi-detached school building on rectangular floor plan, with a design in which an assimilation between the formal language and building techniques of the New Building movement with traditional Limburgish building materials is expressed. Asymmetrically designed facades, consisting of basalt plinths with basement vents and facing of sawn Kunrader stone. The composition comprises horizontal elements (window sequences continuing around the facade corners), alternated by a vertical steel window with leaded glass by Hub.Levigne and a series of six ungla zed plastic windows marking the stairwell. These are situated above and beside the recessed entrance section with concrete canopy. The portico is provided on both sides with reliefs by Charles Vos, depicting a number of schoolchildren and a number of Ursuline Sisters.

On the canopy a plaque with a representation of Saint Ursula. In the rear facade horizontal series of tall windows for maximum light entry into the classrooms. In the second and third storey rear facade over the entire facade width balcony with balustrade entirely in concrete.

Of INTERIOR is among others of importance: stairwell with treads in hard stone and with railing with wooden armrest; in the front facade a tall leaded glass window by Hub. Levigne with wrought iron grilles in front of it; authentic doors; between corridor and classrooms vitrine-like walls used for exhibiting pupils' work.

Former assembly hall with authentic wall cupboards and wooden panelling all around. Classrooms in second storey somewhat modified.

Valuation

The former teacher training school of the Ursuline Sisters is of cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of a social, spiritual, technological and typological development.

The school is of architectural-historical value because of its importance for the history of architecture, because of the high-quality aesthetic quality of the design and the particular coherence between exterior and interior; of very great importance because of the material use and as a specimen of the oeuvre of architect A.J.N. Boosten.

As an object of more recent building art it is an essential part of the protected townscape Maastricht and of special significance for the appearance of the city.

The building has a very great degree of architectural integrity of both interior and exterior and is of importance in relation to the visual integrity of the urban environment and moreover because of the high degree of architectural-historical rarity.
