Inleiding
Met elementen van Chaletstijl, met historiserende en romantische invloeden in 1900 naar een ontwerp van architect Jac. van Gils gebouwd WOONHUIS, genaamd Huis van Pijls. Het is gesitueerd in de gesloten wand van de Batterijstraat binnen het beschermd stadsgezicht Maastricht.
Omschrijving
Het woonhuis heeft een in dwarsrichting geplaatste rechthoekige plattegrond, telt drie bouwlagen en wordt afgedekt met een zadeldak met kunstleien. Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is rode baksteen, hardsteen, hout en geglazuurde tegels. Rechthoekige houten deur en vensters met bovenlichten.
Smal, hoog opgetrokken pand met twee vensterassen. Hardstenen plint, hardstenen deurlijst met fronton waarin zich het Maastrichtse stadswapen bevindt. Dubbel kruiskozijnen met ten dele hardstenen traceringen in een segmentboogveld met vlechtingen in het vulstuk. Twee smeedijzeren muurankers met monogram. Tussen eerste en tweede bouwlaag een hardstenen waterlijst die via een waterspuwer met dierenkopmotief op de hemelwaterafvoer aangesloten is. In de tweede laag bevinden zich twee T-vensters met luiken. In de tweede bouwlaag linksonder naast venster een gevelsteen met de naam van de architect. In de derde bouwlaag een band met veelkleurige geglazuurde tegels, voorzien van florale motieven, tussen houten consoles, waarop een vakwerkconstructie rust. Twee rechthoekige houten T-vensters met drieruits bovenlichten en halve luiken, rechthoekig ongeleed zoldervensters. Groot houten chaletoverstek, met vlechtbandmotief en versierde naald.
Interieur ingrijpend gewijzigd, overigens niet beschermenswaardig.
Waardering
Het woonhuis Batterijstraat 58 is van architectuurhistorische waarde wegens het bijzondere belang voor de bovenregionale geschiedenis van de architectuur; voor het oeuvre van Jac van Gils;wegens de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp; het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek.
Ensemblewaarde ontleent dit woonhuis aan de situering binnen het beschermd stadsgezicht Maastricht en daarmee van belang voor het aanzien van dit deel van de stad.
Het woonhuis is tenslotte van algemeen belang op grond van de architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur en de architectuurhistorische zeldzaamheid.

Description
The dwelling has a rectangular floor plan placed in the transverse direction, comprises three storeys and is covered with a gabled roof with artificial slate. The building material used is red brick, hardstone, wood and glazed tiles. Rectangular wooden door and windows with fanlights.
Narrow, tall-erected property with two window bays. Hardstone plinth, hardstone door surround with pediment in which the Maastricht city coat of arms is located. Double cross windows with partly hardstone tracery in a segmental arch field with interlacing in the filling piece. Two wrought-iron wall anchors with monogram. Between first and second storey a hardstone drip moulding which connects via a water spout with animal head motif to the rainwater downpipe. In the second storey there are two T-windows with shutters. In the second storey bottom left next to window a facade stone with the name of the architect. In the third storey a band with multi-coloured glazed tiles, provided with floral motifs, between wooden corbels, on which a half-timber structure rests. Two rectangular wooden T-windows with three-pane fanlights and half shutters, rectangular unglazed attic windows. Large wooden Chalet overhang, with interlaced band motif and decorated spire.
Interior substantially altered, otherwise not worthy of protection.
Valuation
The dwelling Batterijstraat 58 is of architectural-historical value because of its special importance for the above-regional history of architecture; for the oeuvre of Jac van Gils; because of the aesthetic qualities of the design; the special use of materials and the ornamentation.
Ensemble value is derived by this dwelling from its situation within the protected townscape Maastricht and is therefore important for the appearance of this part of the city.
