Inleiding
Voormalige LAGERE SCHOOL, thans kinderdagverblijf Kastanjehof.
Omstreeks 1900 gebouwd in een eclectische stijl, gesitueerd in de lineaire bebouwingsstructuur van Amby. De aanbouwen van een bouwlaag aan zij- en achtergevels zijn uitgesloten van bescherming.
Omschrijving
Schoolgebouw met een bouwlaag en zolderverdieping op T-vormige plattegrond in lengterichting. Gedekt door tussen trapgevels verzonken zadeldak met muldenpannen, centraal tegen de achtergevel geplaatste uitbouw van een bouwlaag onder plat.
De voorgevel, waarvan de symmetrie slechts wordt doorbroken door de plaatsing van de entreepartijen, telt acht assen, onderling gescheiden door zich verjongende steunberen met sierankers, rode bakstenen profielranden en hardstenen afdekking. De derde en de vijfde as worden bekroond door een dakkapel met trapgevel.
De school is opgetrokken in baksteen op een geprofileerde plint met hardstenen lijst en gemetseld in kruisverband. Rechthoekige dubbele kruiskozijnen met hardstenen traceringen, verdiept gelegen in lichtrode bakstenen profiellijsten met aanzetstenen in de segmentboog, gele bakstenen drukbogen en rode spitsbogen in de vulstukken.
Hardstenen traptreden, segmentboogvormige dubbele houten deuren. Kroonlijst met spitsboogfriezen in lichtrode baksteen. De bakgoten rusten op een lijst decoratief metselwerk.
De linker zijgevel heeft een geprofileerde plint, hoeklisenen uitlopend in een trapgevel met gestucte afdekking en spitsboogfries, sierankers, hardstenen dorpels en lateien, spitsboogvormige vensterlijsten in rode profielsteen, gele bakstenen drukbogen en schoon metselwerk in de vulstukken. De spitsboogfries en de uitkragingen van de trapgevel rusten op hardstenen consoles. De eerste laag telt twee vensterassen, de tweede laag drie.
De rechter zijgevel wijkt hier slechts vanaf door de aan de situering van het trappenhuis aangepaste plaatsing van de vensters: twee boven elkaar geplaatste reeksen met drie, in de richting van de achtergevel trapsgewijs aflopende spitsboogvensters.
De vensters van de oorspronkelijke achtergevel zijn geheel vernieuwd.
Het opgehoogde schoolplein met drie kastanjebomen wordt omgeven door een gedeeltelijk authentiek smeedijzeren hekwerk op bakstenen basement waarin twee hekpijlers. Het interieur van de school is na de herbestemming tot kinderdagverblijf volledig gemoderniseerd, ook voor wat betreft de indeling.
Waardering
De Kastanjehof is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele ontwikkeling. De architectuurhistorische waarden worden bepaald door de bouwstijl, de esthetische kwaliteiten, het materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek. De school is vanwege de situering verbonden met de ontwikkeling van de voormalige gemeente Amby en van belang voor het aanzien van deze plaats. School building with one storey and attic storey on a T-shaped floor plan in longitudinal direction. Covered by a gabled roof with curved Spanish tiles set back between stepped gables, centrally positioned extension of one storey under a flat roof against the rear facade.
The front facade, whose symmetry is only broken by the placement of the entrance areas, has eight bays, separated from each other by tapering buttresses with ornamental wall anchors, red brick profile edges and sandstone capping. The third and fifth bays are crowned by a roof dormer with a stepped gable.
The school is built in brick on a profiled plinth with sandstone moulding and laid in English bond. Rectangular double cross windows with sandstone tracery, recessed in light red brick profile mouldings with responding stones in the segmental arch, yellow brick relieving arches and red pointed arches in the infill pieces.
Sandstone steps, segmental arch shaped double wooden doors. Cornice with pointed arch friezes in light red brick. The rainwater gutters rest on a moulding of decorative brickwork.
The left side facade has a profiled plinth, corner mouldings ending in a stepped gable with stucco capping and pointed arch frieze, ornamental wall anchors, sandstone sills and lintels, pointed arch window mouldings in red profile brick, yellow brick relieving arches and fair-faced brickwork in the infill pieces. The pointed arch frieze and the projections of the stepped gable rest on sandstone consoles. The first storey has two window bays, the second storey three.
The right side facade differs here only by the arrangement of the windows adapted to the location of the staircase: two sets of three pointed arch windows placed one above the other, stepping down in the direction of the rear facade.
The windows of the original rear facade have been completely renewed.
The raised schoolyard with three chestnut trees is surrounded by a partially authentic wrought iron fence on a brick basement with two fence piers. The interior of the school has been completely modernised following its conversion to a children's daycare facility, including with respect to the layout.
