Inleiding
In eclectische stijl gebouwd ZIEKENHUIS genaamd Sint Elisabeth-Tehuis, met verwijzingen naar de Richardson-architectuur, omstreeks 1887 gerealiseerd naar een ontwerp van de architecten Bildmeyer en Van Riel uit Antwerpen, in opdracht van het Burgerlijk Armbestuur. Het voormalige ziekenhuis is vrijstaand gesitueerd aan de rand van de oude binnenstad. Het voormalige ziekenhuis vormde een onderdeel van het Calvariënberg-complex voor geneeskundige en geriatrische (armen)zorg in Maastricht.
Omschrijving
Het voormalige ziekenhuis heeft een vierkante plattegrond, telt twee bouwlagen en wordt afgedekt met zadel-, schild- en tentdaken met imitatie-shingles. Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is baksteen, mergel en kunststeen. Gekoppelde vensters met bovenlichten. Hardstenen plint geaccentueerd met een band mergel. Trapsgewijs oplopende, symmetrische voorgevel met vijf venstertraveeën, bekroond met spitse topgevel. In het centrale geveldeel bevinden zich de toegangsdeuren onder een gedrukte spitsboog, geflankeerd door risalerende, getrapte muurdammen met schouderstukken. Deze dragen een fantasiebekroning in de vorm van torentjes. Op de verdieping een balkon. Boven de toegangsdeuren een veld met vier rondboognissen, daarboven een grote spitsboognis met twee spitsboogvensters. Daarboven een groot rozet met bak- en zandsteendecoratie, boogveld met baksteendecoratie. De terugliggende bouwdelen hebben elk twee vensterassen en zijn voorzien van een achtkante traptoren met tentdak. Aan de rechter zijgevel een uitbouw in een bouwlaag met plat dak. Gevellijst tussen de bouwlagen. Speklagen in mergel.
In de achtergevel van het gebouw twee blinde muurdelen. Hier bevonden zich twee ziekenhuisvleugels. Linker- en rechterdeel achtergevel uitlopend in topgevel.
In het INTERIEUR zijn onder meer van belang: centrale hal met tegelvloer, met rondom een band Namense steen; rond deze centrale hal zijn de vertrekken gegroepeerd. In de hal vier grote gietijzeren kolommen op hardstenen basementen waarop de galerij van de eerste verdieping rust; galerij met smeedijzeren balustrade; centrale hal met lichtkoepel rustend op gestucte consoles; deuren van de kamers op begane grond met decoratieve houten omlijsting; aan de linker- en rechterzijde van de centrale hal een trappenhuis met houten trap en houten leuning. Smeedijzeren hekwerk op natuurstenen muur. Bijzonderheden: op dit terrein aan de achterzijde van de nieuwbouw van Klevarie bevindt zich een gedeelte van de oude stadsmuur. Dit deel is opgebouwd uit mergelblokken en baksteen en bevindt zich deels in slechte staat van onderhoud.
Waardering
Het voormalige Sint-Elisabeth-Tehuis is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische en typologische ontwikkeling. Het voormalige ziekenhuis bezit architectuurhistorische waarden vanwege de bouwstijl, de betrokkenheid van de architecten Bildmeyer en Van Riel, de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, de bijzondere ornamentiek, en de samenhang tussen ex- en interieur. A HOSPITAL built in eclectic style called Sint Elisabeth-Tehuis, with references to Richardson architecture, realized around 1887 after a design by architects Bildmeyer and Van Riel from Antwerp, commissioned by the Civil Poor Relief Authority. The former hospital is situated free-standing at the edge of the old city centre. The former hospital formed part of the Calvariënberg complex for medical and geriatric (poor relief) care in Maastricht.
Description
The former hospital has a square floor plan, comprises two storeys and is covered with gabled, hipped and pitched roofs with imitation shingles. The building materials used are brick, marl and artificial stone. Coupled windows with fanlights. Hard stone plinth accentuated with a band of marl. Stepped-rising, symmetrical front facade with five window bays, crowned with a pointed gable. In the central facade section are the entrance doors under a depressed pointed arch, flanked by projecting, stepped wall buttresses with shoulder pieces. These carry a fantasy crown in the form of small towers. On the first floor a balcony. Above the entrance doors a field with four round-arch recesses, above that a large pointed arch niche with two pointed arch windows. Above that a large rosette with brick and sandstone decoration, arch field with brick decoration. The recessed building sections each have two window axes and are provided with an octagonal stair tower with pitched roof. On the right side facade an extension in one storey with flat roof. Facade cornice between the storeys. Banding in marl.

In the INTERIOR the following are noteworthy: central hall with tiled floor, with a band of Namur stone around it; the rooms are grouped around this central hall. Wrought-iron railings on natural stone wall. Particulars: on this site at the rear of the new Klevarie building, there is a section of the old city wall. This section is built of marl blocks and brick and is partly in poor condition.
