Inleiding

- vanwege de gaaf gebleven hoofdvorm en detaillering en het behouden oorspronkelijke interieur;

- als zeldzaam geworden authentiek voorbeeld van vermaningen uit de tweede helft van de 19de eeuw;

Introduction

Mennonite MEETINGHOUSE, from the 1870s in sober eclectic style with rendered front facade. The architect or master builder is not known.

On the site stood a section of road, formerly a meetinghouse, of which the current building is a replacement. The building faces the road with its front facade (SW) on the Oost-Graftdijk, in the linear development of the village. The meetinghouse is separated from the road by an iron railing fence.

Description

The brick hall church (laid in Flemish bond) has a white-rendered front facade and is covered by a gabled roof with black Dutch tiles.

At the rear a vestry is attached under a half-hipped roof. The building has a brick plinth which is cemented at the side facades and rear facade. In the white-rendered front facade, a natural stone front is suggested through score lines in the rendering. On the axis of the facade is the entrance to the meetinghouse. This double wooden panelled door stands on the plinth with a hardstone step of a few treads in front. Together with a panel on which the text is painted: 'Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Jam.4:8', and with a semicircular fanlight, the entrance is surrounded by a broad continuous moulding. The roof edge projects slightly and is supported by a number of consoles.

The side facades (NW and SE) are identical. They each contain three high-set semicircular-headed windows with wooden white-painted frames and green glazing bars. The natural stone imitation of the front facade is carried round the corner. The gutters are supported here by small wooden consoles.

The rear facade (NE) consists of the straight termination of the church space, against which a narrower extension under a half-hipped roof has been built. In the extension there are two six-pane sash windows beside each other in the centre of the northeastern facade. The ascending sides of the roof plane have a carved roof edge. Above the extension, against the wall of the church space, stands a brick chimney, which breaks through the roof edge.

In front of the meetinghouse is a small courtyard, paved with brown and yellow clinker bricks, which is separated from the road by a cast-iron railing fence.

The interior is accessed via a vestibule at the front, consisting of a hallway, flanked by a storage cupboard and a stairwell which provides access to the upper singers' gallery. The hall itself, with broad pale wooden floorboards, has benches along three walls and loose chairs in the middle of the space.

The simple hexagonal pulpit with sounding board stands against the rear wall (NE) on a heavy base. On either side of it there is a door which on the left leads to the vestry and on the right conceals a deep cupboard behind it. The walls of the meetinghouse are white-rendered (recently the mouldings along the windows and at the foot of the roof structure have been painted grey). A staggered timber lining runs along the walls. The singers' gallery receives light through the window above the entrance in the front facade and is closed towards the interior by a balustrade. Most of the woodwork has been recently painted. (In the 1980s the colours were white with blue for the doors and light brown for the ceiling). A gently curved wooden ceiling (recently covered with plywood) with tie rods, spans the whole. The low vestry with a fireplace with Delftware tiles in the wall bordering the church space, has its own external entrance door (E).

The inventory of the meetinghouse includes, among other things, half a dozen brass paraffin lamps and a series of stoves.

Valuation

The Mennonite church (meetinghouse), with associated railings, is of general importance on account of its architectural-historical value:

- because of its well-preserved main form and detailing and the retained original interior;

- as a rare authentic example of meetinghouses from the second half of the 19th century;

- because of the characteristic simplicity in material, construction and furnishing.

The inventory is of cultural-historical value as it contains, among other things, five paraffin lamps, all from the previous century.

The Mennonite church is of cultural-historical value as an element in the history of Anabaptist communities in the Netherlands.
