Inleiding

Description
Introduction
DIJK DWELLING named: "House of the Lords of the Alluvial Lands under Fijnaart c.a.", located on the dike of the Oude Heijningse Polder, embanked in 1583. The house is locally better known as "Fort Oranje", referring to the 18th-century fortification in which the house was enclosed. A part of the moat of the former bastion is still present. The current building dates from 1768 and replaces an earlier house from 1669. The rear extension was added in 1920/21 according to a design by architect L. Lenoir. The extension on the right dates from the nineteen-fifties and replaces an older barn. In the house lies a polygonal room, where until recently the annual meeting of the 'Lords of the Alluvial Lands' took place on the last Tuesday in June.
Description
The single-storey house with elongated floor plan forms together with the later extensions one whole under an extended gabled roof with on the left a three-sided termination. It is covered with Old Dutch tiles. The walls are built in handmade brick in stretcher and English bond and closed off by a broad gutter on corbels. At the dike lies the entrance with a panelled door and two-part fanlight. To the right are two twelve-pane sash windows. The reveals above the broad frames indicate a later replacement of bulge frames by sash windows. To the left of the entrance a bulge frame with small glazing bars, provided with shutters. In the three-sided termination of the house located to the west lies a polygonal room with five twenty-pane sash windows with shutters. This room is partly cellared. The rear of the house has French doors and a dormer with a six-pane window. Tie anchors in front and rear façades, except where the corner room is located.
At right angles to the rear façade stands the extension (1920-21) of a two-storey dwelling house under a raised hipped roof with Old Dutch tiles. The building, partly built in handmade brick, shows traces of changes in the masonry. There are T-shaped and six-pane windows that are finished straight or with a segmental arch. A roof cornice closes off the façades. In the rear extension the cellaring and parts of the dike house from 1768 are integrated.
The single-storey triangular enclosed building has internally a polygonal room with timber lining, in which are incorporated among other things a chimney and a cupboard with panelled decoration as was customary in the 18th century. In the roof an octagonal timber vault. In another room there is a timber cupboard and bed alcove wall. In the building there is a dry toilet.
Valuation
The dike house has cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of an administrative development, in particular that of the history of water management and control. The building is of architectural-historical importance because of the distinctive relationship between exterior and interior. The dike house has special value because of its location, connected with the historical development of the region and administration. The dike house is important because of its architectural-historical, typological and functional rarity.
