De HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG van de buitenplaats De Achterhoek kent een eenvoudige, landschappelijke aanleg die vermoedelijk omstreeks 1830 is ontstaan. Vanaf de Colmschaterweg loopt een slingerende oprijlaan naar het vrijwel vierkante voorplein. Rondom het hoofdgebouw en het koetshuis kenmerkt de tuin- en parkaanleg zich door een besloten karakter. Ten noorden en oosten van het hoofdgebouw ligt een royale open gebied met thans (1997) weiden en bouwland. De aanleg wordt grotendeels omgeven door een droge gracht en wordt voor ca. driekwart omsloten door een singel.
Aan de noordwest-zijde verbreedt en verdiept de gracht zich tot een slingerende waterpartij die dwars op de zichtas voor het huis ligt en als een voorgrond voor het zicht dient. Aan de noordelijke ronding van de waterpartij staan hoge bomen die het besloten gedeelte afschermen van de het open gebied.
Thans (1997) wordt rondom de buitenplaats een woonwijk aangelegd waarin de zichtlijn vanaf het huis in een groenzone buiten de omgrenzing van de buitenplaats wordt voortgezet.
Waardering
HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG behorende tot de buitenplaats De Achterhoek, van algemeen belang:
-als zeldzaam en representatief voorbeeld van een midden-19de-eeuwse kleinschalige aanleg in landschapsstijl;
-vanwege het belang van de aanleg voor de geschiedenis van de tuin- en landschapsarchitectuur;
-vanwege de vrij gaaf bewaarde structuur;
-vanwege de functioneel-ruimtelijke relatie met de andere onderdelen van de buitenplaats.

Description
The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT of the country house De Achterhoek features a simple, landscape design which is presumed to have originated around 1830. From the Colmschaterweg a winding drive runs to the virtually square forecourt. Surrounding the main building and the coach house, the garden and park layout is characterised by an enclosed character. To the north and east of the main building lies a spacious open area with currently (1997) meadows and arable land. The layout is largely surrounded by a dry moat and is enclosed for approximately three-quarters by a belt of woodland.
On the northwest side the moat widens and deepens into a winding water feature which lies across the sight line in front of the house and serves as a foreground for the view. On the northern curve of the water feature stand tall trees which screen the enclosed section from the open area.
Currently (1997) a residential district is being developed around the country house in which the sight line from the house is continued in a green zone outside the boundary of the country house.
Assessment
HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country house De Achterhoek, of general importance:
-as a rare and representative example of a mid-19th-century small-scale design in landscape style;
-because of the significance of the layout for the history of garden and landscape architecture;
