The register's description

HOOFDGEBOUW (zie kaart nr. 1)

MAIN BUILDING (see map no. 1)

The house built in 1739 is constructed in two storeys of whitewashed brick and with the front facade facing east; in 1841 it was provided with a monumental entrance section, after which it was expanded to the north in the first half of the 19th century into an L-shaped building; the oldest part can be designated as a simple country house in rural Baroque style, while the north wing from the first half of the 19th century can be characterized as Neo-classical.

EXTERIOR OF MAIN BUILDING

Front Facades

Constructed partly of whitewashed brick, partly of natural stone; only the oldest left section is underpinned with a cellar; the mansard roofs are covered with slate; profiled cornice on brackets; on the roof plane five four-light roof dormers with a simple tympanum; on the right side of the east wing is a tower with a gate dating from 1841; to the left of this entrance eight window bays, to the right three bays; in the bays T-windows set in Namur stone. The plan of the east wing shows a slight deflection, which begins to the right of the gate, and also contains on the right a projecting corner (a former tower-like element with a different storey height than the left section); natural stone plinth, which because of the slightly sloping terrain is narrow on the right side and gradually widens towards the left; large carriage gateway with double wooden doors; the framing of the gate is constructed of segment blocks with W II 1841 in the keystone; the tower above the gate features natural stone dressed pilasters, with long horizontal blocks between them; above the gate a T-window, a tympanum and a single-hand clock face; the square domed tower constructed in 1890 of cemented material above the tympanum has a facade panel likewise constructed of horizontal blocks between dressed pilasters; in the facade panel a wooden four-light opening with rounded arch at the top, and with six-light glazing bars; dome roof in helmet form covered with slate, with oeil-de-boeuf in it; small wooden bell tower above, resting on four small columns; on the small tower a tympanum and weathervane with the Dutch lion, dating from the time when King Willem II was the owner; in the small tower a bell. Two cemented stone vases in front of the entrance, as well as a large natural stone plaque with the inscription of the transfer of Vaeshartelt by the heirs Grimaudet de Rochebouet to Willem II.

The projecting section on the right has in the left side facade narrow windows on both ground floor and first floor, below round and above straight-topped; natural stone corner pilasters and a natural stone string course at the height of the springing of the window arches; the first floor facade is set slightly back in relation to that of the ground floor; the front facade features two round-arched windows with Empire division on the ground floor, and two straight-topped windows on the first floor; the latter windows have narrow cast-iron railings; the keystones of the windows on the ground floor are provided with a volute with leaf motif, those on the first floor have diamond decoration; dressed pilasters (with base and capital) beside the windows on the ground floor, and at the ends of the facade panels on ground floor and first floor; on the corner pilasters those of the ground floor with rosettes inserted in a recessed field; above the windows on the first floor cornice and profiled natural stone moulding; dentil course below gutter, roof dormer with tympanum.

The showpiece facade of the north wing has on the ground floor a central section of natural stone consisting of three bays, beside it on both sides four bays with between and above the windows (whitewashed) brick; the first floor likewise has a central section of natural stone, and contains in the window bays mainly natural stone with only narrow wall sections between the windows, executed in (whitewashed) brick; on the ground floor round-arched Empire windows, and on the first floor straight-topped likewise windows in natural stone framing with keystones, as described previously; dressed pilasters on the ground floor and plain pilasters on the first floor; the pilasters are grouped two by two on the bases, those of the ground floor furthermore have continuous capitals between every two pilasters; beneath the windows as a parapet horizontal natural stone slabs with recessed fields in them; cast-iron railings for the windows on the first floor; the central section has on the ground floor a double round-arched door and two round-arched recesses, framed by dressed pilasters on bases, with above them in recessed fields a garland; above the door likewise a garland; on the first floor a door in richly ornamented round arch between broad flat pilasters with round ornament in the centre, and on both sides an Empire window (these forms correspond with those of the now again visible former rear facade, which admittedly was no longer an exterior facade due to the addition of the Fumoir, but through the application of painted wallpaper for a time was also no longer visible as a wall); in the large tympanum above the central section a radial window in natural stone 'cluster' framing; around 1865 an added richly ornamented cast-iron conservatory - with a large balcony above it - in front of the entrance; two roof dormers with segment-arched tympanum and cheeks with volutes.

The INTERIOR of the north wing is executed in a rich Empire style, as evidenced by the fireplace mantels, the wainscoting and the ceilings. Noteworthy is the so-called Rotunda, a round hall facing the park with semi-circular recesses and four double doors in the walls. In the Fumoir added in 1865 are landscapes painted on linen, among others by Jules Lefevre from 1866.

At right angles adjoining the north wing a newly built connecting structure to the former stables; to the left of it a now freestanding natural stone carriage gateway, then the connecting structure, and then again a gate (in contrast to the former, this one is blocked) in a partially preserved old stable wall, behind which a recently built residential building rises. The components dating from 1994 are considered not to be included in the protection.

Side Facades In the western side facade of the north wing two painted blind windows on the first floor. In the south facade of the east wing cellar access in natural stone framing.

Rear Facades The west facade with the gate features six bays with T-windows, of which one on the left at ground floor level contains the gateway passage, which is provided with the coat of arms of Regout in the keystone; above it is a window; above the gate both to the left and right beside the dome a high chimney cemented in block pattern; of the five window bays beside the gate the middle one at ground floor level is occupied by a house door with the date 1739 above it and a natural stone step of four round treads in front; the Neo-classical rear facade of the other wing became an interior wall due to the 1865 addition by commission of the industrialist Petrus Regout of a smoking room - the so-called Fumoir - on that side; the younger rear facade has four window bays with T-windows set in natural stone; one window on the first floor (the second from the left) is blocked.

Against the left side of the section built in 1739 a garden wall (straight-topped at the top) adjoins - against which in 1906 five garages were built - which at right angles continues, and features a high brick carriage gateway, thus forming the connection between dwelling house and coach house; the garages are of secondary significance for the protection. Against the left side of the coach house adjoins a garden wall with buttresses; the covering at the top has the form of a sagging roof and is executed in marl.

The COACH HOUSE is L-shaped and presumably also dates from 1739 (and has been altered several times since); it is now connected by an eating room and connecting structure built in 1994 with the north wing; this eating room is not included in the protection; directly beside the high brick carriage gateway (in the garden wall) a blocked hatch and new square windows; on the right a door in natural stone framing and still one original square window; past the corner a large carriage gateway with double wooden doors in natural stone framing; roof dormers added to the roof planes; on the south facade of the coach house above barred windows; on the left a former dwelling; on the west facade stable windows and a second former residential section; on the roof plane roof dormers and a light strip have been added.
