Omschrijving
Inleiding
Een in 1897 tot stand gekomen villa. Gebouwd in opdracht van H.A. Elias. De architect was C.B. Posthumus Meyjes. Gebouwd in eclectische classicistische trant.
Omschrijving

Description
Introduction
A villa completed in 1897. Built on commission of H.A. Elias. The architect was C.B. Posthumus Meyjes. Built in eclectic classicistic style.
Description
The originally entirely detached villa is constructed from red brickwork with whitewashed sections and ornaments and stands on a plinth or rustica zone composed of polished and roughly dressed blocks of natural stone. The villa is designed on a rectangular floor plan with rounded extension on the east side and straight extension on the north side. Three storeys are distinguished: ground floor, first floor and second floor. The roof is in the form of a truncated hipped roof, covered with shingles or slates. On the east side the projecting roof of the central risalition. Various roof dormers on the roof slopes. The small roof dormers have windows with casement windows and classicistic details such as frieze and pediment.
The central larger roof dormers have a T-window and classicistic details. Striking is the parabolic-shaped pediment. Furthermore zinc edges on the hip rafters and a broad heavily profiled cornice at the upper side of the roof slopes.
On the east side two tall whitewashed chimneys - on either side of the large roof dormer - with smoke openings under cover plate and a decorated wall anchor. The chimneys form as it were a continuation of the whitewashed vertical accents of the east facade.
All facades are strongly articulated horizontally and vertically.
The south facade has above the plinth the facade surface erected in red brickwork with windows and cock combs. Striking is the strict rhythm of the whitewashed blocked corner pilasters/lisenes with single triglyph and guttae, the whitewashed middle section and the broad profiled whitewashed cordon course and narrow whitewashed moulding above the first floor. The middle section shows on the ground floor the entrance section. A staircase with six steps provides access to the portico with entrance door with fanlight. The entrance is placed in a whitewashed frame consisting of squat pilasters with Renaissance capital. The capital consists of a frieze with floral representation, consoles, architrave bands and a segment-shaped pediment with floral and heraldic representation in the tympanum. On the first floor in the middle section a window is placed surrounded with closed balustrade, pilasters, frieze with geometric motives, consoles and a triangular pediment with floral decorative elements. In the zone of the mezzanine rectangular cartouches with garlands and geometric motives.
Projecting profiled gutter moulding on brackets.
The east facade has above the plinth left and right similar facade surfaces as on the south facade. The middle section of the facade risalits and is flanked by more heavily executed whitewashed and blocked pilasters/lisenes. At the top a double two-part triglyph with guttae. On the ground floor a five-sided bay extension of the reception room or salon. The extension has windows with sash windows all around.
At the front a straight staircase with wrought-iron railing leads to the double opening door. On the extension a balcony with recent metal balustrade. On the first floor the upper part of the original projection of the east facade.
This projection too features blocked whitewashed corner pilaster/lisenes on partial basement. Further three windows with sash windows. In the zone of the mezzanine rectangular decorative cartouches with garlands. Projecting gutter moulding on brackets.
The north and west facades are executed more soberly. On the north facade one sees the attached garage.
NB In 1908, on commission of Jonkheer dr. G.J. Elias, on design of architect C. Wiegand jr., the built-in terrace on the first floor by the bedroom was drawn. In 1927, on commission of A.H. Kleiweg de Zwaan, architect F.A. Warners designed and built a garage adjacent to the north side. A.F. Baak was the structural engineer of the reinforced concrete works in this renovation/extension. The facade on the Hobbemastraat was also modified. A five-sided extension of the reception room or salon on the ground floor came into being. In 1970, part of the original garden fence was removed on the side of the Paulus Potterstraat.
Valuation
Property of general interest because of its architectural historical value. Of urban importance as a character-defining component of the villa development around the Museumplein. Further of added interest as corner construction of the villa block, enclosed by the Hobbemastraat, the Jan Luijkenstraat, the Honthorststraat and the Paulus Potterstraat. The main form has been reasonably well preserved.
