The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

A WORKERS' DWELLING of the compressed type realised in 1919 in sober brick architecture. In 1919 a row of five identical workers' dwellings was built on the unpaved Mûntsegroppe on spacious individual plots on behalf of the St. Woningbouw Achtkarspelen (then Building Committee Buitenpost). Mûntsegroppe 14 is the best preserved example of the four remaining dwellings of this type.

In 1948 a chicken coop was built on the plot, in 1989 a sheep shed; both fall outside national monument protection due to insufficient age.

Description

The workers' dwelling of the compressed type is constructed in one storey. The gabled/hipped roof is covered with red unglazed Dutch tiles and has a taut wind board and water board connected to the facade. On the ridge is a brick chimney. The dwelling is constructed in red pressed brick: the residential section in solid brick, the barn section in half-brick. The gable top on the front is clad with vertical rabat boards. In the front facade are two wooden H-windows under a stretched course; a brick offset. In the top gable two small rectangular windows. In the right side facade of the residence a narrow H-window. The compression wall on the left side has a narrow H-window; otherwise the entire left side facade is blank. In the rear facade on either side of the stable door a rectangular window. On the corner is a rainwater well on a dome-shaped reservoir. In the right facade of the barn section a loft window and a rectangular window, both directly under the roof edge. The facade is articulated by two wall buttresses: one at the height of the compression wall, the other between both windows, each fitted with an anchor. In the compression wall of the right side facade is the original nailed front door under a roll mould.

Valuation

The workers' dwelling of the compressed type, realised in 1919 in Harkema, is of cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:

- as a particular expression of socio-economic development in the countryside, notably of social housing,

- because of the typological affinity with small holdings,

- because of the high degree of architectural intactness,

- because of the high degree of visual intactness of the object in itself and as a corner dwelling of the entire row of dwellings,

- because of the particular significance of the complex through its location, connected with the development of the region,

- because of the historical-spatial relationship with the surroundings, the clearance land, the heathland, the unpaved roads and the tree-lined landscape.
