Inleiding

Introduction

RECTORY, built in 1875, belonging to the adjacent neo-Gothic St. Werenfriduskerk by architect Th. Asseler of 1874-1875, and connected to it by a sluice-like extension. The rectory is built in eclectic style, with predominantly neo-Gothic elements. The building is located on the north side of Dorpsstraat. A fence and front garden separate the rectory from the street.

Description

Rectory, built on rectangular groundplan, consisting of two storeys under a clipped hipped roof covered with slate. The length of the clipped hipped roof runs parallel to the street. The brickwork is laid in brown brick with accents in yellow brick, such as the horizontal bands running around at the level of the lower and intermediate lintels of the windows and the decorations in the arch soffits and spandrels of the windows on the first floor. Natural stone is used among other things in the doorstep treads, drip lintels, gable, setting and closing stones. The plinth is cemented. Between the ground floor and first floor is a row of decorative tiles (front facade only).

The richly decorated front facade (S) is five window bays wide. On the corners and on either side of the central bay are pilasters. The central bay contains on the ground floor the entrance section, consisting of a porch with three doorsteps, two whitewashed natural stone columns and a pediment-like crown. The front door is a panelled door with side lights and a five-pane fanlight. In the central section on the first floor is a rectangular wooden sash window flanked by pilasters, which cut through the cornice. On the attic storey the pilasters flank a roof dormer under an inset gabled roof. The roof dormer has a narrow rectangular wooden window and is crowned by a gable. In the gable is a cornerstone with date (1875). The four remaining window bays on the ground floor contain a slightly recessed wooden sash window, flanked by whitewashed brick columns with stuccoed fantasy capitals. On the first floor the bays contain a rectangular wooden sash window with relieving arch above an arch soffit. The facade is finished with a Gothic arch frieze which is interrupted at the central section.

The side facades (E and W) are three bays wide and are virtually blind. The detailing and articulation of the front facade continues across the side facades (plinth, horizontal bands in yellow brick, arch frieze). In the left side facade (W) on the ground floor in the central bay is a spandrel, on the first floor a wooden sash window. In the right side facade (E) a small window is placed between the ground floor and first floor. To the rear right (at the northeast corner) is the sluice-like extension between rectory and church.

The rear facade (N) is white rendered and is provided with mortar joints imitating natural stone. Recurring details of the front facade that reappear in the rear facade are the corner pilasters, roof dormer with pilasters and the arch frieze.

Valuation

The building is of general importance from a cultural-historical and architectural perspective as a well-preserved example of a rectory built in eclectic style from the second half of the 19th century. In addition, the rectory has ensemble value with the adjacent St. Werenfriduskerk.
