Inleiding

Introduction

The tall WINDMILL or so-called American wind motor stands on a polder dike at Bûtendiken in nature area Petgatten De Feanhoop. Until 1995 the mill stood on a polder dike of the former water board "De Hooge Warren". The windmill was a dominant landmark near the Grietmansrak on the Kromme Ee, into which the excess water drained. The water board encompassed at its establishment in 1905 480 hectares on the territory of the municipalities of Smallingerland, of which the mill processed 391 hectares. The windmill of the type "Hercules Metallicus", created according to the American model, imported from Germany by the Rotterdam trading company R.S. Stokvis & Zonen, was installed here in 1926. The standard foundation structure was foregone in favour of a wooden shed with roof "around the wind motor" to be constructed by a carpenter from Oudega. The specifications according to which the work was carried out were by architect Lourens. The mill was the only one to pump out the entire polder. In the winter period the sluice gate in the waterway was opened, by which the polder was inundated, to prevent damage to the polder dikes.

In 2001 the mill was placed at its current location to the northeast of De Veenhoop. It now pumps out the Groote Veenpolder.

Description

The tower with windwheel stands on a concrete foundation. On the foundation a new wooden mill shed built around the base of the tower. The inlet is fitted with an iron trash rack, behind which the iron screw pump; in the waterway a wooden sluice gate. The steel tower has a ladder and a wooden platform. The windwheel has a span of approximately eleven metres and has 30 galvanised iron blades. The mill is equipped with two vanes: a main vane and a side vane. The first serves for self-regulation according to wind direction, the second for self-regulation according to wind strength. On the arm of the vanes hangs an iron ladder.

Valuation

The so-called American wind motor from 1926 is of cultural-historical and industrial-archaeological importance:

- for the history of industrial archaeology, in particular of windmills,

- due to the development of pumping technology according to the American model,

- due to its role in the development of the pumping history of the former water board De Hooge Warren,

- due to a reasonable degree of integrity,

- due to its landscape significance as a striking landmark along the Binnenringvaart,

- due to the high degree of rarity in the municipality of Smallingerland and the region of de Friese Wouden.
