Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The SLUICE GATE, formerly designated as Lock I, was built in 1893 and is located near the mouth of the Drachtstervaart into the Drait. The work was executed by contractor O.M. Meek from Donkerbroek, on commission of the Provincial Water Authority. The wall below the lock was extended in 1899 with a wooden wall facing. In 1935 the lock was restored again by contractors H. and W. Visser at Lemmer. In the nineteen-fifties the lock was modified again by, among other things, the installation of a pumping station on one of the lock heads. Outside the protection of national heritage falls the narrow iron bascule bridge of circa 1935 over the lock chamber, due to subordinate importance.
Description
The floor of the lock consists of reinforced concrete. The lock walls are built up in clinker brick and furnished with armoured concrete casings with iron angle profiles and armoured concrete corner reinforcements of the lock heads. On one of the lock heads stands a paddle wheel and on the lock gates stand wind gear boxes, for the purpose of water discharge without locking. The lock gates consist of a framework of riveted steel beams with a covering of sheet steel. On the lock banks is a clinker paving in which iron bollards are embedded.
Valuation
The lock of the Buitenstvallaat from 1893 is of cultural-historical importance:
- as a particular expression of the socio-economic development of Drachten, which is connected with the peat transport since the 17th century,
- as a particular expression of the water authority development, which is connected with the improvement of the network of waterways in south-east Friesland with Drenthe and Groningen achieved in 1876,
- on account of the historical-spatial relationship with the Drait at the mouth of the towing canal, the Drachtster Vaart, - on account of the high degree of visual integrity in conjunction with the lock keeper's house,
- on account of the high degree of rarity, as the only surviving lock in this canal.
