Inleiding

Sluis I) in de Drachtstervaart.

Introduction

The LOCK KEEPER'S HOUSE, or watermaster's dwelling, was built in 1893 on commission and according to a standard design of the Provincial Water Authority by contractor O.M. Meek from Donkerbroek. The dwelling is oriented towards the lock: the front facade of the projecting section stands directly on the former towpath (now widened) that separates the dwelling from the lock chamber (so-called Lock I) in the Drachtstervaart. On the rear side there is a spacious garden.

Due to insufficient architectural value and recent date, the following fall outside the protection of the national heritage: a kitchenette of brick built on to the rear of the dwelling around 1950 under a gabled roof and the former workshop.

Description

The floorplan of the service dwelling is L-shaped. The dwelling consists of one storey under a composite gabled-hipped roof. The building is built predominantly in reddish-brown brick. The plinth is rendered with Portland cement and dark green paint marks are indicated at the height of the lower, intermediate and upper dormer windows and as imitation joints in the gable top; moreover this paint is applied as embellishment on the imitation keystone and on the horizontal brick course above the segmental arch.

The composite gabled-hipped roof with ample eaves is covered with muted corrugated Friesland tiles. On the right roof slope is a brick chimney. The wind brace of the gable is furnished with a decorative moulding; the gutter mouldings are now flat. On the corners of the surrounding gutter mouldings simple hanging decorations have been applied and for the most part preserved. On the corners of the ridge are wooden casings placed over the roof posts; the one on the gable closes off a decorative rafter and is crowned with a weather vane.

Almost all windows in the front and side facades have a natural stone drip moulding and are closed off by a segmental arch with a drum field consisting of ornamental brickwork of yellow bricks; the narrow window in the left side facade is closed off by a straight brick course. The windows of the front facades contain six-light windows with exterior shutters, the windows of the side facades contain three-light windows. The front door has been renewed; the fanlight contains remnants of a painted imitation stained-glass window. In the gable top a new two-light window has been installed.

Valuation

The lock keeper's house from 1893 is of cultural-historical and typological importance:

- as an essential component of the water authority complex in the Drachtster Compagnonsvaart that has been preserved,

- as a typological example of the standardised service dwelling of the Provincial Water Authority,

- on account of the reasonable degree of integrity of the exterior of the service dwelling,

- on account of the historical-spatial relationship with the lock in the Drachtstervaart,

- on account of the high degree of visual integrity,

- on account of the reasonable degree of rarity, as a lock keeper's house along the Drachtster Compagnonsvaart.
