Inleiding

Sydwint in 1663.

Introduction

NETHERLANDS REFORMED CHURCH, built in 1868 by architect B. Sleister in eclectic style. The church lies south of the Dorpsstraat, set back somewhat at a forecourt. Northeast of the church lies the former 19th-century town hall of Harenkarspel. The church was built to replace the older Netherlands Reformed Church - demolished in 1868 - which was situated at the location where the town hall now stands.

Description

Hall church, built on a rectangular plan, under a slate-covered gabled roof. The gabled roof lies recessed between the gable ends, the ridge line is perpendicular to the Dorpsstraat. In the northern gable end (front facade) there is a largely built-in tower in the middle. The church is six bays deep.

The church is constructed of brick, with eclectic detailing in the front facade executed in sandstone. The load-bearing structure of the wooden gabled roof consists of a wooden hammerbeam truss with iron tie rods.

The front facade (N) has a hard stone plinth and is three bays wide. The facade is terminated on the left and right by buttresses with natural stone capping plates crowned by pinnacles. The left and right bays are each one window unit wide. A natural stone drip moulding (at one-third of the height) intersects the buttresses at the corners. Above the drip moulding are located (from bottom to top) a parapet of five coupled natural stone corbels, a round-arched window with stained glass and natural stone tracery. Below the roof cornice a natural stone arched frieze is applied.

The central bay is formed by the tower which projects slightly. The tower consists of three parts: a square base rising above the gabled roof, an octagonal belfry with louvres, and a crowning spire with slates and a weather vane. At the foot of the square base is the entrance portal with a double wooden door with neo-gothic motifs, a semicircular fanlight with wooden tracery, framed by a natural stone archivolt. Above the entrance are located (from bottom to top): a drip moulding in the form of a pediment, a parapet and a round-arched window (as in the outer bays), and above that finally six coupled corbels, of which the two central ones contain a window. The square base of the tower has rusticated sandstone corner stones and is terminated at the top by a brick cornice which is interrupted on three sides (N, E, and W) by a triangular crowning, in which the clock faces are set.

The side facades of the church (E and W) have a high masonry brick plinth. The side facades are divided by brick pilaster strips into six bays. Each bay contains a round-arched window with stained glass and natural stone tracery. In both side facades the northernmost window (at the front facade) is blind. In the left side facade (E) a rectangular double six-light window with fanlights is placed below this blind window. Both side facades are terminated at the top by a dentil course and a simply profiled wooden rain gutter. The rear facade (S) is blind except for two sash windows and a door, which are located in the left half. The door with plastered surround is accessible via a hard stone stair with three steps. The rear facade is bounded on either side by brick buttresses, capped with sandstone plates.

The interior consists of a single-aisle church space covered by the aforementioned hammerbeam truss with seven trusses under a wooden gabled roof. The trusses rest on corbels in the side walls. The spaces between the collar ties, curved beams and roof rafters are filled with decorative woodcarving of quatrefoils and frames with small wooden balusters. Wrought-iron hanging lamps are attached to the iron tie rods. The windows all have white glass panes. The church space is currently (1994) reduced on the south side by one bay. A living space has been created on the south side by placing a partition wall behind the sixth roof truss. As a result, only six of the seven roof trusses are now visible in the church space. The front porch on the north side of the church gives access to the church space and to two other rooms: on the left (E) the consistory room, on the right (W) a storage room and the stairs to the gallery on which the organ is placed.

In the church space, against the east wall is the originally 17th-century pulpit, which comes from the burnt wooden predecessor of the church. On a gallery against the north wall is the richly decorated organ built by L. Ypma with Great and Upper Work. The organ dates according to an inscription on the balustrade panels from 1870 ("ANNO 1870") and is tuned in D according to an inscription on the central panel ("D"). On the south wall of the church hang two wooden memorial boards, originating from the church in Kerkbuurt. The memorial boards were made by G.M. Sydwint in 1663. On the left board is "The Lord's Prayer", on the right board the ten commandments. The wooden church pews and gentlemen's pews date from the time the church was built. The canopies of the gentlemen's pews are supported by small Doric columns. An inscribed text mentions the laying of the first stone of the church on 3 December 1868 by the then mayor of Dirkshorn C. Francis and his wife M. Smit. In the front porch two 17th-century memorial stones are mounted, one decorated with among other things two family coats of arms. Both memorial stones date from 1659 and come from the 17th-century predecessor of this church. Mechanical tower clock by Adam Batstra, 1869.

Valuation

The Netherlands Reformed Church is of general importance from a cultural-historical and architectural-historical perspective as a well-preserved example of a Protestant village church built in eclectic style from the second half of the 19th century. The church is also of importance from an urban planning perspective due to its characteristic setting, in conjunction with the adjacent 19th-century town hall, in the village of Dirkshorn.
