Inleiding

WETHOUDERS".

Introduction

A former detached TOWN HALL of the municipality of Sint Maarten, built in 1911 in neo-renaissance style. The property is situated on the south side of the Hoge Buurt and separated from it by a front garden.

Description

A former town hall, built on a rectangular ground plan and consisting of a basement and two storeys beneath a hipped roof with a ridge line parallel to the street. The hipped roof is covered with red Dutch tiles and has two square chimneys on the ridge. In the roof are several small roof dormers set under a flat roof, each with a wooden four-paned window.

The masonry of all four gables is constructed in red brick above a rendered plinth. The red brick is interspersed with accents in natural stone, such as the stone courses at the level of the upper and lower lintels of the windows, the corner and closing stones of the window stretches and relieving arches, corner and setting stones at the level of the calf stones, several arch stones and accents in the stepped gable. Hardstone is used in the lower lintels of windows and doors and in the pavement and steps. At various places in the masonry, the tails of the (ornamental) wall anchors are visible. The cross windows all have shutters with hourglass motifs.

The front gable (N) is three bays wide, the middle one—with the entrance section—projects and extends through the cornice to a roof dormer with a stepped gable. The entrance section is reached via a stoop with four steps and consists of a bolted double door with two tall fanlights with stained-glass windows. Above the entrance, on the first floor, is a wooden balcony resting on consoles with a robust wooden balustrade. Two opening glazed panel doors open onto the balcony. Above the fanlights of the balcony doors is an arch drum with decorative brickwork and a carved stone featuring the municipal coat of arms. In the stepped gable of the roof dormer is a small horizontal window with wooden shutters and in the arch drum is a carved stone with the date "MCMXI". On either side of the central projection, on both floors, is a bay with a neo-renaissance cross window, with shutter openings beneath the calf stone and stained-glass panes above. The front gable, like the side gables and rear gable, is finished with a profiled wooden cornice on wooden cornice brackets.

The right side gable (W) is two window axes wide and contains cross windows on both floors as on the front gable.

The left side gable (O) is also two bays wide and contains a cross window in the right bay on both floors; the left bay contains a cross window between the floors.

The rear gable (W) contains four rectangular wooden windows in the stairwell. The windows all have stained-glass panes and white-glazed panes. On the first storey are three windows, on the second storey one.

Of the interior, the former council chamber on the first floor remains intact with regard to the whitewashed natural stone fireplace with blue and white tiles and the wooden ceiling. The roof beams of the ceiling rest on wooden consoles with volute-like carved work. In the hall on the ground floor is set a marble foundation stone with the text "THE FIRST STONE OF THIS BUILDING ABOVE THE TRASRAAM WAS LAID 22 OCTOBER 1910 BY A. KLERK MAYOR P. DE BOER J. BRUIN GZ. ALDERMEN".

Valuation The property is of general importance from a cultural-historical and architectural point of view as a well-preserved example of a village town hall built in neo-renaissance style from the first quarter of the 20th century.
