Introduction

Originally a 17th century dwelling house which was remodelled around 1905 whereby it received a new front elevation and some new interior elements. The dwelling forms part of the closed monumental streetfront development between which this, together with the dwelling at number 5, stands out due to the front elevation built in transitional style, colourful, decorated.

Description

The front elevation is constructed from brownish brick and enlivened with corner pilasters topped by concrete elements which project at the height of the profiled gutter line placed between them; furthermore orange-yellow moulded bricks, frieze and lintel arches and band under the gutter, green glazed brick facade bands and threshold stones and a natural stone plinth. On the ground floor there is a wooden two-light window, on the upper floor a three-light window, both with sash windows with glazing bars in the upper windows; the ground floor window is equipped with a built-up, decorated roller shutter case. Entrance with original panelled door with top light with glazing bars. On the hipped roof covered with red Dutch tiles is a small wooden roof dormer. Behind the early 20th century front elevation are, adjoining, a narrow 17th century front and rear house. Both parts are two storeys high and fitted with exposed roof truss structures with each three oak trusses (the trusses of the rear truss with curved braces). In the front and rear house are composite 17th century beam layers with profiled tie-beams. Part of the loft floor of the front house is fitted with a single beam layer with tie-beams on one side. The presumably early 20th century staircase with dog-leg opening is located at the rear of the front house. The rear elevation is fitted with sash windows and in the top a wooden cross window, with shutters for the lower openings. Behind the rear house is a narrow building section that is one storey high under a tile roof with a small, one storey high and transversely placed outbuilding with partly plastered elevations under a gabled roof covered with tiles.

Valuation

The dwelling is of architectural and cultural-historical value on the one hand because of the front elevation which represents a very recognizable and strikingly decorated early 20th century building style in Zeeland, of which few examples in good condition exist outside Zierikzee, and on the other hand because of well-preserved 17th century, mainly constructive, elements in the dwelling house.
