Inleiding
Rooms katholieke zaalkerk, gelegen aan de Markt in het centrum van de stad, in 1900 in opdracht van de katholieke parochie van Onze Lieve Vrouw Hemelvaart onder leiding van pastoor Beddink in neo-gothische stijl gebouwd naar ontwerp van architect P. Snel te Hoorn. De kerk kwam tot stand na afbraak van de oude kerk in 1900 en werd ingezegend op 19 november 1900. Het aan de zuidwestzijde van de kerk en aan de Paulinastraat grenzende zogenaamde Patronaatsgebouw valt buiten de bescherming. Dit geldt eveneens voor het orgel in het kerkgebouw.
Omschrijving
De kerk heeft een vierkante toren en een kleine rechthoekigesacristie aan de rechter voorzijde.
Het geheel is opgetrokken uit roodbruine machinale baksteen. Het siermetselwerk is in gele strengperssteen uitgevoerd, de raamtraceringen in oranjerode steen.
De topgevel aan de Markt bezit in het midden een enigszins vooruitspringende ingangspartij onder een spitsboog met driehoekige top met daarboven twee spitsboogvormige blindnissen. De dubbele deur van blank gelakt hout heeft grote smeedijzeren gehengen. Aan weerszijden van de ingang bevinden zich gekoppelde vensters onder opgeknikte rollagen en daarboven glas-in-lood spitsboogvensters in spitsboogvormige nissen. Centraal in de geveltop een groot rozetvenster, met natuurstenen traceringen en glas-in-lood; daarboven een reeks blindnisjes. De zijgevels zijn door lisenen in vijf traveeen geleed, ieder met een glas-in-lood spitsboogvenster; doorlopende decoratieve daklijst.
De toren heeft een vierkante plattegrond, is horizontaal in vieren geleed en afgesloten door een achtkantig bouwvolume met achthoekige spits. Op de begane grond bevindt zich een eenvoudige ingang, en op de verdiepingen diverse vensters, blindnissen en galmgaten in een spitsboogveld.
De sacristie rechts van de toren heeft eveneens enkele en gekoppelde gothische vensters en wordt aan de voorzijde afgesloten door een attiekje.
De kerk is voorzien van een zadeldak gedekt met leien in maasdekking en van enkele dakkapellen met persiennes en glas-in-lood bovenlichten. De achthoekige torenspits is eveneens gedekt met leien in maasdekking, zo ook de aanbouw met plat en driezijdig schild.
In het interieur bevinden zich veel zaken uit de bouwtijd, onder meer de betegelde kerkvloer, houten deuren met glas-in-lood raampjes, houten kerkbanken. Het houten tongewelf werd in 1911 voorzien van schilderingen met bijbelse voorstellingen o.l.v. architect Jac. van Gils te Rotterdam en uitgevoerd door A. Federle te Kleef. Het neo-gothisch altaar met een onderstuk van franse zandsteen en een houten bovendeel, de neo-gothische preekstoel en een aantal beelden werden in 1901 ver vaardigd door M. van Bokhoven te 's-Hertogenbosch. Het altaardoek, voorstellende de ten hemelopneming van Maria, werd in 1911 uitgevoerd door H. Luns te Rotterdam. In de kerk hangen 14 schilderijen, op triplex geschilderd, die de kruiswegstaties uitbeelden.
Waardering
Het kerkgebouw is van cultuurhistorische waarde als uitdrukking van een geestelijke ontwikkeling en van architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van neo-gothische bouwkunst. Roman Catholic hall church, located at the Markt in the centre of the city, built in 1900 on the orders of the Catholic parish of Our Lady's Ascension under the direction of pastor Beddink in neo-gothic style according to the design of architect P. Snel of Hoorn. The church was constructed following the demolition of the old church in 1900 and was consecrated on 19 November 1900. The so-called Patronaatsgebouw adjoining the church on the south-west side and bordering on Paulinastraat falls outside the protection. This also applies to the organ in the church building.
Description
The church has a square tower and a small rectangular sacristy on the right front side.
The whole is built of reddish-brown machine-made brick. The decorative brickwork is executed in yellow pressed-brick, the window traceries in orange-red brick.
The gabled roof at the Markt has in the middle a somewhat projecting entrance section beneath a pointed arch with triangular top with above it two pointed-arch-shaped blind niches. The double door of blank lacquered wood has large wrought-iron hinges. On either side of the entrance are coupled windows beneath bent rollers and above them stained-glass pointed-arch windows in pointed-arch-shaped niches. Centrally in the gable top a large rose window with natural stone traceries and stained glass; above it a row of blind niches. The side gables are articulated by pilasters into five bays, each with a stained-glass pointed-arch window; continuous decorative roof line.
The tower has a square ground plan, is horizontally divided into four sections and closed off by an octagonal building volume with octagonal spire. On the ground floor there is a simple entrance, and on the upper storeys various windows, blind niches and sound holes in a pointed-arch field.
The sacristy to the right of the tower likewise has single and coupled gothic windows and is closed off at the front by a small attic.
The church is provided with a gabled roof covered with slates in Maas-laying and with some roof dormers with louvres and stained-glass fanlights. The octagonal tower spire is likewise covered with slates in Maas-laying, as is the extension with flat and three-sided hipped roof.
In the interior there are many items from the time of construction, including the tiled church floor, wooden doors with stained-glass panes, wooden church pews. The wooden barrel vault was provided in 1911 with paintings depicting biblical scenes under the direction of architect Jac. van Gils of Rotterdam and executed by A. Federle of Cleves. The neo-gothic altar with a base of French sandstone and a wooden upper part, the neo-gothic pulpit and a number of sculptures were made in 1901 by M. van Bokhoven of 's-Hertogenbosch. The altarpiece, depicting the assumption of Mary, was executed in 1911 by H. Luns of Rotterdam. In the church hang 14 paintings, painted on plywood, which depict the stations of the cross.
Valuation
The church building is of cultural-historical value as an expression of a spiritual development and of architectural-historical value as an example of neo-gothic architecture. It is moreover the only neo-gothic church building in North Zeeland. Not only on the exterior, but also in the interior are many original items present.
