Inleiding

Description
Introduction
PALM HOUSE AND FERN HOUSE, erected in 1912 by commission of Public Works and presumably designed by J.M. van der Mey, located in the southern corner of the Hortus Botanicus, bordering on Plantage Parklaan and the Hortus pond in the Plantagebuurt. NB. The palm house, which was built concurrently with the botanical laboratory at the direction of Prof. Dr. Hugo de Vries, houses a special collection of palms and cycad palms with representatives of approximately 100 different taxa.
Description
An L-shaped glasshouse building of iron, dark brown brick and glass consisting of a central hall on a circular ground plan covered by a tent roof executed in iron and glass with a round lantern beneath the tent roof with weathervane, with a northwestern longitudinal hall of four bays, together with the central hall originally intended as palm house, and a northeastern longitudinal hall of three bays, originally intended as fern house. Both longitudinal halls have a hipped roof executed in iron and glass. The façades of the central hall and the side façades of both wings are articulated by large window frames, originally nine panes wide and eight panes high per bay, later modified to a 36-pane division with wooden window frames and concrete sashes. The windows are closed at the top by a decoratively laid segmental arch and separated by wall piers with decorated pilasters, at the top recessed in brick shapes and with hollow profiles, at the bottom with strong convex moulding and taut wall anchors. At the top of the masonry a brick moulding with hollow profile, above which a white-painted wooden cornice. Layered yellow-brown glazed underpanels. In the gable ends two narrow tall windows, each three panes wide and six high, with segmental arch. On the right side of these windows is located in the fern house a wooden door with glazed lower division, on the left side against the gable end placed a rectangular reddish-brown brick chimney. In the extension of the fern house a rectangular extension of one storey housing the heating installation. In the gable end of the palm house the windows are placed further apart. On the exterior the original large roller blinds as sun screening are still present. Moveable ladders are attached against the roofs. The main entrance - now on a trapezoidal ground plan beneath a glazed canopy, originally smaller in design - is placed against the central hall and consists of three wooden doors dark green painted on the exterior with four-pane windows, on the slanted sides a four-pane window on a low brick wall.
The iron load-bearing structure in the interior of the central hall consists of twelve radially directed, riveted frame knee-braces on brick bases, connected in the middle by a compression ring on which the round lantern, subdivided by six-pane windows, is placed. The load-bearing structure of the longitudinal halls in the fern house is executed with three and in the palm house with four iron framework braces. The middle braces against the short gable ends rest on concrete consoles with a recessed three-lobed opening. The masonry in yellow facing brick on a dark brown brick plinth has been largely preserved. The fern house is separated from the central hall of the palm house by an intermediate wall executed in iron and glass. In the central hall, on the side of Plantage Parklaan, is located an iron spiral staircase with gallery with balustrade of knobbed spindles resting on two consoles worked open with circular shapes. Above the windows the original tubular heating radiators, in the palm house also heating elements on the ground.
Appraisal
Early 20th-century palm house and fern house with associated components of general importance by virtue of their architectural and cultural-historical value. Of significance as part of the Hortus Botanicus and particularly by virtue of its importance for botanical science, stimulated by the work of Prof. Dr. Hugo de Vries. Also of building-historical importance by virtue of the rare iron load-bearing structure in the central building, as well as of situational value by virtue of the prominent location.
