Inleiding
In een traditionele bouwstijl in 1915 naar een ontwerp van architect N. Ramakers uit Sittard gebouwd Katholiek Sanatorium voor Drankzuchtigen.
Het voormalige SANATORIUM is markant gesitueerd tegen de helling van de Keerderberg. Aan de rechterzijgevel een aanbouw in een bouwlaag met plat dak. Aan de achtergevel een aanbouw uit 1964 in twee bouwlagen en met een plat dak en met een gangverbinding met het hoofdgebouw. De aanbouwen zijn uitgesloten van bescherming.
Omschrijving
Het voormalige sanatorium heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond telt twee deels drie bouwlagen plus een souterrainverdieping, en wordt afgedekt met schilddaken met mulden pannen. Het vrijstaande gebouw bestaat uit een langgerekte vleugel. Symmetrische indeling van de frontgevel met een naar voren springend middendeel met de entreepartij. Souterrainverdieping en trappartij in Kunradersteen, overige bouwlagen in mergel. Houten rechthoekige vensters. Houten rechthoekige deur in een houten rondboogvormige ingangspartij. Trappartij ingang met ijzeren balustrade en decoratieve ijzeren lantaarns. Boven de ingangspartij een nis met beeld Sint Gerlach en in smeedijzeren letters de naam "Huize Sint Gerlach". Smeedijzeren muurankers. Dakkapellen bekleedt en bedekt met leien.
Waardering
Het voormalig sanatorium Sint Gerlach is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en typologische ontwikkeling. Het object bezit streekgebonden architectuurhistorische waarde en is tevens van belang voor het oeuvre van architect N. Ramakers en vanwege het bijzondere materiaalgebruik. Ensemblewaarde ontleent dit object aan de markante situering tegen de helling van de Keerderberg, en wegens de bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van dit deel van de gemeente Margraten. The detached building consists of an elongated wing. Symmetrical arrangement of the front facade with a projecting central section containing the entrance. Basement level and staircase in Kunradersteen, remaining storeys in marl. Wooden rectangular windows. Wooden rectangular door in a wooden round arch entrance arrangement. Staircase entrance with iron balustrade and decorative iron lanterns. Above the entrance arrangement a niche with statue of Saint Gerlach and in wrought-iron letters the name "Huize Sint Gerlach". Wrought-iron wall anchors. Roof dormers clad and covered with slates.
Valuation
The former sanatorium Sint Gerlach is of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and typological development. The object possesses regional architectural-historical value and is also of importance for the oeuvre of architect N. Ramakers and because of the particular use of materials. It derives ensemble value from its prominent situation against the slope of the Keerderberg, and because of its particular significance for the character of this part of the municipality of Margraten.
