Inleiding
Aan drie zijden vrijstaand herenhuis uit ca. 1870, gebouwd in opdracht van Johann Heinrich Witsenburg in een eclectische bouwstijl. Het huis maakt onderdeel uit van een reeks van vier identieke herenhuizen aan de Koninginnegracht 37 t/m 40.
Omschrijving
Herenhuis op rechthoekige plattegrond bestaande uit een sou- terrain en twee bouwlagen onder een zinken roevendak, drie vensterassen breed.
De gevels zijn van baksteen en ter hoogte van het souterrain bekleed met gepleisterde hardsteen. De bouwlagen worden van elkaar gescheiden door een gepleisterde cordonlijst, waarboven een geprofileerde waterlijst. De rechteras is als risaliet behandeld en bevat de ingang, bestaande uit een dubbele paneeldeur met twee glas-in-lood panelen en een getoogd glas- in-lood bovenlicht. De deur bezit een geprofileerde, gepleisterde omlijsting bestaande uit pilasters op piedestals, voorzien van schachten met verdiepte velden, een eierlijst en boogzwikken in empire-stijl. Het erboven gelegen balkon rust op zware gebeeldhouwde bladconsoles en bezit een baluster- balustrade. Het T-vormige venster in de risaliet heeft openslaande deuren die op het balkon uitkomen en wordt geflankeerd door pilasters met verdiepte velden en Corintische kapitelen. Op de kapitelen rust een hoofdgestel, bestaande uit een fries met panelen en een gebogen fronton met eierlijst. De vensters op de eerste bouwlaag bezitten aan de onderzijde lambrequins; op de tweede bouwlaag bevinden zich T-vormige stolpramen. Voor de tweelichtvensters van het souterrain zijn ijzeren tralies geplaatst. Het hoofdgestel is gekornist en bezit panelen in het fries. De kroonlijst rust op houten klossen.
De zijgevel is drie vensterassen breed, waarvan de middelste als risaliet is behandeld. Drie vensters zijn als blindnis uitgevoerd, waarvan een op de eerste bouwlaag in de risaliet en twee op de tweede bouwlaag aan weerszijden van de risaliet.
Het souterrain bevat twee tweelicht vensters met ijzeren tralies.
Het hoofdgestel, de cordon- en waterlijst, en de hardstenen bekleding van het souterrain lopen over de zijgevel door. Aan de achterzijde is een uitbouw met balkon. In de gevel daarboven zijn diverse venstervormen, waaronder T-kozijnen.

Description
Mansion on rectangular plan consisting of a basement and two storeys beneath a zinc-covered glazing-bar roof, three window bays wide.
The facades are of brickwork and at the level of the basement are clad with rendered sandstone. The storeys are separated from each other by a rendered cordon moulding, above which a moulded drip moulding. The central bay is treated as a risalit and contains the entrance, consisting of a double panelled door with two leaded glass panels and an arched leaded glass fanlight. The door possesses a moulded, rendered surround consisting of pilasters on pedestals, provided with shafts with recessed fields, an egg-and-dart moulding and arch spandrels in Empire style. The balcony situated above it rests on heavy carved leaf consoles and possesses a baluster balustrade. The T-shaped window in the risalit has opening doors that lead onto the balcony and is flanked by pilasters with recessed fields and Corinthian capitals. On the capitals rests a head-piece, consisting of a frieze with panels and a curved pediment with egg-and-dart moulding. The windows on the first storey possess lambrequins at the bottom; on the second storey are T-shaped cross windows. Before the two-light windows of the basement are placed iron grilles. The head-piece is corniced and possesses panels in the frieze. The cornice rests on wooden blocks.
The side facade is three window bays wide, of which the central one is treated as a risalit. Three windows are executed as blind openings, of which one on the first storey in the risalit and two on the second storey on either side of the risalit.
The basement contains two two-light windows with iron grilles.
The head-piece, the cordon and drip mouldings, and the sandstone cladding of the basement continue across the side facade. At the rear is an extension with balcony. In the facade above are various window forms, including T-shaped frames.
