Inleiding
Herenhuis uit ca. 1870, gebouwd in opdracht van Johann Heinrich Witsenburg in een eclectische bouwstijl. Het huis maakt onderdeel uit van een reeks van vier identieke herenhuizen aan de Koninginnegracht 37 t/m 40.
Omschrijving
Herenhuis op rechthoekige plattegrond bestaande uit een souterrain en twee bouwlagen onder een dwars zinken roevendak, drie vensterassen breed.
De gevels zijn van baksteen en ter hoogte van het souterrain bekleed met gepleisterd hardsteen. De bouwlagen worden van elkaar gescheiden door een gepleisterde cordonlijst, waarboven een geprofileerde waterlijst. De rechteras is als risaliet behandeld en bevat de ingang, bestaande uit een dubbele paneeldeur en een getoogd bovenlicht. De deur bezit een geprofileerde, gepleisterde omlijsting, bestaande uit pilasters op piedestals, voorzien van schachten met verdiepte velden, een eierlijst en boogzwikken in empire-stijl. Het erboven gelegen balkon rust op zware gebeeldhouwde bladconsoles en bezit panelen aan de onderzijde alsmede een balusterbalustrade met siervazen in neo-Lodewijk XVI stijl. Het T-vormige venster in het risaliet heeft openslaande deuren die op het balkon uitkomen en wordt geflankeerd door pilasters met verdiepte velden en Corintische kapitelen. Op de kapitelen rust een hoofdgestel, bestaande uit een fries met panelen en een gebogen fronton met eierlijst.
De (vernieuwde) vensters op de eerste bouwlaag bezitten aan de onderzijde lambrequins; op de tweede bouwlaag bevinden zich T- vormige stolpramen. Voor de tweelichtvensters van het souterrain zijn ijzeren tralies geplaatst. Het hoofdgestel is gekornist en bezit panelen in het fries. De kroonlijst rust op houten klossen.
De achtergevel is gepleisterd en bezit op de eerste bouwlaag een uitbouw met balkon.
Waardering
Herenhuis van architectuurhistorisch belang als representatief voorbeeld van de eclectische bouwstijl. Hoofdvorm, materiaal en detaillering zijn gaaf bewaard. Als onderdeel van een reeks identieke herenhuizen heeft het pand tevens ensemblewaarde. Een toegevoegde waarde vormt de beeldbepalende situering aan de Koninginnegracht.

Town house on rectangular plan consisting of a basement and two storeys under a transverse zinc rafter roof, three window bays wide.
The facades are of brick and at basement level cladded with plastered hard stone. The storeys are separated from each other by a plastered cordon moulding, above which a profiled drip moulding. The right bay is treated as a risalit and contains the entrance, consisting of a double panelled door and a segmental arched fanlight. The door has a profiled, plastered frame consisting of pilasters on pedestals, provided with shafts with recessed fields, an ovolo moulding and arch spandrils in empire style. The balcony above it rests on heavy carved leaf consoles and has panels on the underside as well as a baluster balustrade with ornamental vases in neo-Louis XVI style. The T-shaped window in the risalit has casement doors that open onto the balcony and is flanked by pilasters with recessed fields and Corinthian capitals. On the capitals rests a main cornice, consisting of a frieze with panels and a curved pediment with ovolo moulding.
The (renewed) windows on the first storey have lambrequins on the underside; on the second storey there are T-shaped sash windows. For the two-light windows of the basement iron grilles are placed. The main cornice is corniced and has panels in the frieze. The cornice rests on wooden blocks.
The rear facade is plastered and has on the first storey an outbuilding with balcony.
Assessment
Town house of architectural-historical importance as a representative example of the eclectic architectural style. Main form, material and detailing are well preserved. As part of a row of identical town houses, the property also has ensemble value. An added value is formed by its prominent position on Koninginnegracht.
