Introduction DWELLING HOUSE WITH YOUNGER SHOP FRONTAGE, situated in the closed, southern facade wall of the Steentilstraat at the corner with the narrow Battengang, originally a seventeenth-century or eighteenth-century building, rebuilt around 1870 and provided with a monumental cornice-topped facade and a shop frontage in an eclectic building style. Description The building is erected on a ground plan which is essentially rectangular and comprises two storeys and a mezzanine floor under a gabled roof, covered with a Dutch pan. On the side of the Battengang the building has an almost blind eighteenth-century long side facade of dark red brick, which is closed off by a simple gutter. The front facade is three bays wide and is entirely plastered and provided with false joints. The front facade is closed off by a monumental cornice with a profiled gutter, which rests on four consoles decorated with foliage. The entire width of the ground floor is occupied by a wooden shop frontage which is built up from a composition of flat cut side pilasters upon which a corbelled and profiled architrave rests, which is supported by double-volute consoles.
