Inleiding KLEDINGATELIER MET KANTOREN EN MAGAZIJN, gesitueerd op de hoek van de gesloten, zuidelijke gevelwand van de Steentilstraat en de Battengang, gebouwd in 1908 in opdracht van L. van Dam (Firma Muller & Co.) naar ontwerp van de Groninger architect K. Bolhuis in Overgangsarchitectuur met elementen van de Art Nouveau-stijl. Het gebouw is thans in gebruik als winkel en het aansluitende magazijn is in gebruik als studentenhuisvesting en daartoe inwendig aangepast. Omschrijving Het gebouw is opgetrokken op een diepe, rechthoekige plattegrond en telt drie bouwlagen onder een afgeknot schilddak, belegd met een zwarte golfpan. De voorgevel is drie raamtraveeën breed. Het gevelmuurwerk is opgemetseld uit rode baksteen en voorzien van een natuurstenen borstwering. Voor de voordeur ligt een tweetredige hardstenen stoep. De winkelpui is zeer opengewerkt met rondbogen en smalle muurdammen, die als pilasters met kapitelen zijn vormgegeven. De bovenlichten hebben een fijne roedeverdeling en bevatten kleurig glas-in-lood. Op de eerste verdieping is over de volle breedte van de voorgevel een groot, driedelig venster aangebracht onder een segmentboog met natuurstenen negblokken. De boog wordt gesteund door twee smalle muurdammen. Op de tweede verdieping bevindt zich in het midden een driedelig, rechtgesloten venster met gerende hoeken, geflankeerd door twee rondboogvensters. Introduction CLOTHING WORKSHOP WITH OFFICES AND WAREHOUSE, situated at the corner of the closed, southern facade wall of the Steentilstraat and the Battengang, built in 1908 on commission of L. van Dam (Firma Muller & Co.) after design by the Groningen architect K. Bolhuis in Transitional architecture with elements of the Art Nouveau style. The building is currently in use as a shop and the adjoining warehouse is in use as student housing and has been internally adapted for that purpose. Description The building is erected on a deep, rectangular ground plan and comprises three storeys under a truncated hipped roof, covered with black corrugated tile. The front facade is three bays wide. The facade masonry is built of red brick and provided with a natural stone parapet. In front of the front door lies a two-step stone doorstep. The shop frontage is very open-worked with round arches and narrow wall piers, which are shaped as pilasters with capitals. The fanlights have fine glazing bars and contain coloured leaded glass. On the first floor, across the full width of the front facade, a large three-part window is installed under a segmental arch with natural stone voussoirs. The arch is supported by two narrow wall piers. On the second floor there is in the centre a three-part, right-angled window with canted corners, flanked by two round-arch windows. These windows are closed with cast concrete structural elements. The gable is built up from the facade wall and is rounded off. On either side two pillars are built up. The long side facade contains round the corner a round-arch window, belonging to the shop frontage.
