Omschrijving

Description
Introduction TOWNHOUSE, forming part of an ensemble of four adjoining townhouses, situated in the closed, southern facade wall consisting of late nineteenth-century building of the Radesingel, built in 1899-1900 on behalf of the Groningen contractor/architect P. Belgraver in an eclectic building manner. The front courtyards are bordered by wrought-iron railings from the building period. The building is currently in use as a practice and residential building. The ground floor has been completely modernized internally. Unlike the other three houses, the floor plan of this property differs: a smaller front room and large back room on the bel étage. In the other properties this is reversed. Description The building is erected on a rectangular floor plan and comprises three storeys under a gabled roof, covered with black Frisian pantile. The front facade is three bays wide and laid in reddish-brown brick. The building has a compressed ground floor, which is terminated by a profiled cornice moulding. The windows on the ground floor are straight-headed and have soffits with stucco keystones with female heads and negblocks. The windows on the bel étage have straight-headed windows with semi-circular relief arches and keystones with female heads. The gable top is covered with stucco moulding and contains in the centre a straight-headed window with a continuous sill band. On the rear facade is a wide, rectangular wooden conservatory, which rests on pillars. The floor above this contains three straight-headed windows with raised segmental arches and arch drums with coloured tile filling. The facades are bordered on the street side by wrought-iron railings from the building period. Internally the structure, layout and decoration have been largely preserved with the exception of the modernized basement. Of importance, among others, the wooden staircase and richly ornamented stucco ceilings in the rooms en suite on the bel étage, wooden panel doors and the black marble fireplace in the front room. Evaluation TOWNHOUSE, forming part of a symmetrically arranged ensemble of four townhouses, built in 1899-1900 in an eclectic building style according to the design of the Groningen contractor/architect P. Belgraver, characteristic of the architecture from the end of the nineteenth century, of general importance from an urban planning, cultural-historical and architectural-historical perspective as an intact component of the high-quality urban planning structure of the ring of canals along the south side of the inner city of Groningen.
