Inleiding FOURNITURENMAGAZIJN MET JONGERE WINKELPUI, markant gesitueerd op de hoek van de Herestraat tussen de Grote Markt en de Vismarkt, gebouwd in opdracht van G. Meddens in 1865 in een monumentale, rijk versierde classicistische bouwstijl. De huidige pui is aangebracht in 1891 evenals de erker op de eerste verdieping van de voorgevel. Het gebouw is thans in gebruik als kledingzaak. Omschrijving Het gebouw is opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt drie bouwlagen onder een plat dak. De voorgevel is vijf raamtraveeën breed; de zijgevel telt drie raamtraveeën. De brede, hoge voorgevel is op de Herestraat georiënteerd. De verdiepingen zijn ongelijk in hoogte: een circa 4,5 meter hoge begane grond met houten winkelpui en daarboven twee verdiepingen met verdiept liggende vensters. De penanten in de borstwering van de pui zijn bekleed met natuursteen. De winkelpui heeft in hout uitgevoerde bovenlichten. Centraal in de pui bevindt zich een portiek met toegangsdeur. De pui wordt afgesloten door een omlopende cordonlijst met tandlijst. Op de penanten zijn in stuc zware consoles onder de ter plaatse risalerende cordonlijst aangebracht. Op de lijst staan penanten en een sierlijk hekwerk van gietijzer. Voor de middentravee op de verdieping is een rechthoekige erker met balustrade geplaatst. Rondom de achtruits vensters is lijstwerk en een architraaf in stuc aangebracht. De gevels worden aan weerszijden afgesloten door gebosseerde stuc blokken, die van schijnvoegen zijn voorzien. De fors uitkragende bakgoot wordt gedragen door stuc consoles. De gevel wordt beëindigd door een in hout uitgevoerde balustrade. Waardering Fourniturenmagazijn met jongere winkelpui, vormgegeven in een rijk versierde, classicistische bouwstijl op een unieke wijze, van algemeen belang vanwege het zeer opmerkelijke en uitbundig uitgewerkte decoratieschema van de gevels. The pilasters in the breast wall of the shopfront are clad with natural stone. The shopfront has fanlights executed in wood. Centrally in the shopfront there is a portico with entrance door. The shopfront is closed off by a continuous string course with dentil moulding. On the pilasters heavy corbels have been applied in stucco beneath the string course which projects there. On the course stand pilasters and a delicate cast-iron railing. In front of the centre bay on the storey a rectangular oriel window with balustrade has been placed. Around the back-set windows moulding and an architrave in stucco have been applied. The facades are closed at either side by rusticated stucco blocks, which are provided with false joints. The substantially projecting gutter is supported by stucco corbels. The facade is terminated by a balustrade executed in wood. Assessment Furnishing warehouse with later shopfront, designed in an ornately decorated, classical architectural style in a unique manner, of general importance because of the very remarkable and lavishly executed decorative scheme of the facades. Because of its plastic design, because of its situation at the corner of two facades and because the building stands out above the adjacent buildings, the building forms a striking element in the high-quality urban planning structure of the Herestraat and the Grote Markt in Groningen.
