Inleiding
DIRECTEURSWONINGEN, onderdeel uitmakend van het complex van de cellulaire gevangenis Groningen, vrijstaand gesitueerd aan de oostzijde van de Hereweg aan de uiteinden van de muur, die het complex aan de voorzijde afsluit, gebouwd in circa 1885-1890 in een eclectische bouwstijl. Het betreft twee identieke woningen; de noordelijke woning was bestemd voor de directeur, de zuidelijke voor de adjunct-directeur van de gevangenis. De woningen zijn met de voorgevel naar de straat gericht en thans in gebruik als onderdeel van de Dr. S. van Mesdagkliniek.
Omschrijving
De woningen zijn opgetrokken op een rechthoekige plattegrond en tellen één bouwlaag onder een zadeldak, belegd met een grijze Hollandse pan. De voorgevel is vier raamtraveeën breed en is witgepleisterd en voorzien van schijnvoegen. Het gevelmuurwerk van de zijgevels is witgesausd. De voorgevel bevat op de begane grond een viertal rechtgesloten vensters met een tweedelig bovenlicht. In pleister is de suggestie van strekken aangegeven. De vensters hebben hardstenen onderdorpels en zijn voorzien van houten roosterjalouzieën. De topgevel bevat een rondboogvenster met een vier-ruits roedeverdeling onder een rondboog. Het venster is in een gepleisterd, iets vooruitspringend rechthoekig kader geplaatst dat aan de bovenzijde recht wordt afgesloten door geprofileerd stuc lijstwerk. In het midden boven het venster is een bewerkt smeedijzeren muuranker aangebracht. De zijgevels worden beëindigd door een geprofileerde houten bakgoot op houten klossen.

DIRECTORS' DWELLINGS, forming part of the complex of the cellular prison Groningen, standing freely situated on the east side of the Hereweg at the ends of the wall which closes off the complex at the front, built in approximately 1885-1890 in an eclectic architectural style. These are two identical dwellings; the northern dwelling was intended for the director, the southern one for the assistant director of the prison. The dwellings have their front façade facing the street and are currently in use as part of the Dr. S. van Mesdagkliniek.
Description
The dwellings are erected on a rectangular ground plan and have one storey under a gabled roof, tiled with grey Dutch pan tiles. The front façade is four window bays wide and is whitewashed and provided with false joints. The cavity wall of the side gables is whitewashed. The front façade contains on the ground floor four right-angled closed windows with a two-part fanlight. In plaster the suggestion of courses is indicated. The windows have limestone sills and are provided with wooden jalousie shutters. The gable contains a semicircular arch window with four-pane glazing bars under a semicircular arch. The window is placed in a plastered, slightly projecting rectangular frame which at the top is directly finished off by profiled stucco string coursework. In the middle above the window a worked wrought-iron wall anchor is affixed. The side gables are ended by a profiled wooden gutter on wooden brackets.
