Inleiding
Gebouwd in 1893 als VILLA 'Maria' in opdracht van de Maria Jacoba Hoogerbrugge (dochter van de in 1892 overleden burgemeester Marinus Adrianus Hoogerbrugge) en ontworpen door gemeente-architect P.J. Kramer. Het in Eclectische stijl vormgegeven woonhuis werd in 1930 door de familie Harders, (familie van de inmiddels overleden Maria Jacoba) verkocht aan de gemeente Smilde. Door aannemer C.H. de Jonge werd in 1931 een aanpassing tot gemeentehuis uitgevoerd. Vervolgens werd door dezelfde aannemer een uit 1953 daterend verbouwplan van architectenbureau Nieman en Steeneken uitgevoerd (ingebruikname 1961). Met deze verbouw werd ook een glasapplique van J. Schoenmaker uit Oldenzaal in het trappenhuis geplaatst. Nadien zijn nog enkele aanpassingen uitgevoerd. In 1988-1989 werd door architectenbureau Wouda en Van der Schaaf uit Meppel een verbouwplan ontworpen waarbij een geheel nieuwe vleugel wordt voorgesteld. Op 30 november 1989 werd de verbouw officieel in gebruik genomen.
De bescherming betreft uitsluitend de oorspronkelijke villa.
Omschrijving
Op asymmetrische grondslag gebaseerde villa bestaande uit kelder, twee bouwlagen en een afgeknot schilddak belegd met platte Tuile du Nord; vier met oeils-de-boeuf voorziene dakkapellen met zink bekleed in noordelijk en zuidelijk dakschild; brede daklijst met geprofileerde goot op bewerkte consoles; toren boven entree met helm, achtkantige lantaarn en decoratief bewerkte naald. Gevelopbouw met brede gepleisterde plint waarin aan zuidgevel nog de 2-ruits kelderramen; bakstenen opbouw met speklagen; waterlijst; vensters met in boogveld verschillendsoortige metselmozaieken. Asymmetrische voorgevel met stoep, rondboog portiek met omlijsting, tongewelf en zijwanden met geglazuurde tegels bekleed. Boven de portiek een rondboogvenster eveneens met omlijsting. Rechts van de portiek een terras met geglazuurde tegels belegd. De zuidwesthoek is afgeschuind.

Introduction
Built in 1893 as VILLA 'Maria' commissioned by Maria Jacoba Hoogerbrugge (daughter of mayor Marinus Adrianus Hoogerbrugge who died in 1892) and designed by municipal architect P.J. Kramer. The dwelling house designed in Eclectic style was sold in 1930 by the Harders family (family of the by then deceased Maria Jacoba) to the municipality of Smilde. Description
Villa based on an asymmetrical ground plan consisting of basement, two storeys and a truncated hipped roof tiled with flat Tuile du Nord; four dormer windows with oeil-de-boeuf windows, zinc-clad on northern and southern roof slope; broad roof edge with profiled gutter on worked consoles; tower above entrance with helm, octagonal lantern and decoratively worked finial. Facade construction with broad plastered plinth with on the south gable still the 2-pane basement windows; brick superstructure with decorative stone bands; drip moulding; windows with various types of mosaic brickwork in the arch field. Asymmetrical front facade with stoep, round-arched portico with frame, barrel vault and side walls lined with glazed tiles. Above the portico a round-arched window likewise with frame. To the right of the portico a terrace tiled with glazed tiles. The southwest corner is chamfered.
