Inleiding
Gebouw opgericht als KAZERNE voor de Koninklijke Marachausee in 1886 in opdracht van het Ministerie van Justitie. Het ontwerp is van W.C. Metzelaar. Boven de toegangsdeur zit een sluitsteen met de initialen van Metzelaar en de jaartallen 1886 en 1902. Laatstgenoemd jaartal duidt vermoedelijk op interne aanpassingen van het gebouw als barak voor besmettelijke ziekten. Enkele latere verbouwingen betreffen het interieur en wijzigingen in de noordelijke zijgevel en de aanbouw aan de westelijke achtergevel.
Omschrijving
Sober en functioneel vormgegeven gebouw met aandacht voor ambachtelijke details. Het op een hoek gelegen gebouw met een rechthoekige plattegrond en twee bouwlagen is opgetrokken in baksteen en wordt gedekt door een royaal zadeldak met pannen. Windveren en eenvoudig geprofileerde goot. Gevels geleed door grote 12-ruits schuiframen met ontlastingsboog, smeedijzeren sierankers. Even vooruitspringende ingangspartij met rondboog-bovenlicht met lamp; sluitsteen met initialen en jaartallen. Topgevels met zolderluik eveneens met rondboog-bovenlicht.

Kazernegebouw van cultuurhistorisch, architectuurhistorisch, typologisch en stedenbouwkundig belang, alsook van belang voor de geschiedenis van de Rijkswerkinrichting Veenhuizen; tevens van belang als (eertijds) functioneel onderdeel van het uitzonderlijk waardevolle gebied Veenhuizen. Gaaf.

Building erected as a BARRACKS for the Royal Marechaussee in 1886 on commission of the Ministry of Justice. The design is by W.C. Metzelaar. Above the entrance door is a keystone with Metzelaar's initials and the years 1886 and 1902. The latter year presumably indicates internal adaptations of the building as a barracks for contagious diseases. Several later alterations concern the interior and changes to the northern side facade and the extension to the western rear facade.
Description
A sober and functionally designed building with attention to craftsman details. The corner-located building with a rectangular ground plan and two storeys is constructed in brick and is covered by a generous gabled roof with tiles. Wind vanes and simply profiled gutter. Facades articulated by large 12-pane sash windows with relieving arch, wrought-iron ornamental wall anchors. Projecting entrance section with round-arch fanlight with lamp; keystone with initials and years. Gables with attic hatch likewise with round-arch fanlight.
Valuation
Barracks building of cultural-historical, architectural-historical, typological and urban planning significance, as well as of significance for the history of the Rijkswerkinrichting Veenhuizen; also of significance as a (formerly) functional component of the exceptionally valuable area Veenhuizen.
