Introduction

COUNTRY HOUSE formerly called "de Zandhof", now called "de Steinborg", situated on extensive private grounds and built by the artist Louis A. Roessingh (1873-1951) in a picturesque historicising fantasy style as found in Roessingh's sketches. The whole was executed in phases; thus in 1917 the building volume with a tent roof was added to the north-east side (executed by contractor H. Beuving from Elp). In 1965, at the behest of Roessingh's daughter, A. Bolt-Roessingh from The Hague, the tower-like volume was added to the south-west corner. The tower, inspired by Roessingh's sketches, was executed after a design by the architectural firm J. Boelens from Assen. In 1990-1991 an alteration was executed in romantic style after a design by architect A. Bakema from Zuidhorn, whereby in particular the north-east facade was altered and the inefficient interior space was roofed over. This was done at the behest of Mr. G.C.J. Stein. The protection concerns only the main building. The south-east corner tower was added recently and is not covered by the protection.

Composite building volume erected in whitewashed brick, covered by various roof forms. Front facade (south) from right to left: tower-like volume from 1965 with stepped gable and windows executed with glazing bars and shutters; terrace section with recessed facade section in which door with fanlight; to the right of the door an outbuilding (toilet) under continuous roof slope; to the left of the door and on the axis of a brick dormer with stepped gable, two windows placed one above the other with glazing bars and shutters. East facade from right to left: building volume with basement, storey with two 15-pane windows with shutters, stepped gable with 9-pane upper-floor window with shutters and relieving arch with voussoir; middle section accessible via terrace; threefold coupled window of which the central one consists of two parts with fixed light and provided with a pointed arch field with stylised floral relief, all with 9-pane glazing bars; this section is covered by a gabled roof with openwork roof dormer with pinched spire (currently with poor design and materials). West facade from right to left: terrace with balustrade; spout gable with wattling and top chimney; large terrace doors with glazing bars and shutters; via intermediate section transition to the 1917 extension with windows placed one above the other in the middle axis with glazing bars and shutters; dormer in tent roof. North facade from right to left: 1917 extension with basement in which round-arch door; two storeys with windows with glazing bars, terminated by tent roof; modern intermediate section to the building volume with basement, storey gabled roof with stepped gable on end faces.
