The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

Mansion from 1868, built by contractor-architects Bernhard Kuhnel and Johann Diedrich Meiners in eclectic architectural style. The house forms part of three adjoining mansions in a single design: Scheveningseweg 8, 10 and 12/12a.

In 1967 a number of passages were made between numbers 10 and 12/12a for office purposes. At that time the skylight in the stairwell of number 12 was also sealed. In 1983 a lift shaft was installed.

Description

Mansion on rectangular plan, consisting of basement, two storeys and mezzanine under a flat roof, four bays wide. The brick front facade has a basement clad with natural stone. The storeys are separated from each other by profiled stucco drip mouldings. In the second bay from the right is the entrance, consisting of a double panelled door. The entrance is crowned by a balcony with balusters, resting on heavy carved consoles in neo-Louis XIV style. To its right is a small entrance with a round fanlight, dating from 1935-1936 when the building was converted into two dwellings. The T-windows have richly profiled frames with ornamental elements, consisting of a shell and/or a mask head between acanthus leaves. The basement windows are provided with iron grilles. The facade is finished with a richly decorated cornice, consisting of a frieze with double rectangular mezzanine windows, carved leaf consoles with mask heads and a dentil frieze. The rear facade is plastered with incised grooves. The two-bay wide right section is built out as a risalit. The facade contains for the most part six-pane and four-pane windows. The windows of the first storey have been renewed. Below this is the basement.

Appreciation

Mansion of architectural-historical importance as a valuable example of the rich eclectic architectural style from the third quarter of the nineteenth century and because of the well-preserved main form, detailing and the material used. As part of a series of three adjoining mansions designed in one scheme, the building also has ensemble value.
