Inleiding

Introduction

Mansion forming the right section of the building block Burgemeester van Karnebeeklaan 6, 8 and 10. The building block was constructed in 1873 on commission from Gerrit Henric Gijsbert Braam in eclectic style, probably designed by architect L.A. Brouwer.

Description

Mansion on rectangular plan, consisting of a basement and three storeys beneath a hipped roof, three window bays wide. The right bay is treated as a risalit. The front facade is of brick; the basement is clad with ashlar, decorated with sculptural ornaments; the first storey has rusticated plasterwork.

In the risalit section is found a porte-cochere, consisting of double doors with rich woodcarving in neo-Louis XVI style and an arched fanlight with ornamental plasterwork. For the sake of symmetry this entrance portal is identical to that at number 6. Behind it, however, is not a through-way, but a vestibule. The balcony above the porte-cochere is supported by two herms - human figures that transform from below into a pilaster -, derived from the renaissance. The balcony has a baluster balustrade. The risalit is flanked on the second and third storeys by pilasters with recessed fields and composite capitals in classical style. The pilasters support the main cornice of the risalit section.

The sash windows of the second storey possess a plastered, moulded surround and a gently curved pediment on volute consoles. The window sills likewise rest on volute consoles, between which rectangular panels with decorations are placed. The windows are connected by a moulded string course. The third storey is provided with tilt windows, with a plastered, moulded surround, a keystone and a lambrequin at the lower side.

The main cornice consists of a frieze with rectangular window panels and festoons in neo-Louis XVI style, a dentil moulding and a cornice on corbels.

The interior has largely retained its original structure. The layout of the basement, furnished with yellow and black tiles, is intact. The former porte-cochere has been internally altered. Preserved are the vestibule with rusticated stucco decoration against the walls and eclectic stucco ceiling. From the vestibule a marble stair leads to the hall, accessible via a draught vestibule with wooden panels and glass with etched decoration. The staircase contains stairs with iron baluster spindles and decorated, hand-carved end balusters. The staircase is lit by two windows in moulded, round-arched surrounds and possesses an eclectic stucco ceiling.

On the first storey is a suite of rooms with richly decorated stucco ceilings, of which the central section has a moulding in the form of a quatrefoil, as well as a back room with ovally framed stucco ceiling and a conservatory with fanlight. The original panel doors on this storey have been preserved. The two rooms on the second storey, which originally formed one hall over the full depth of the house, possess simply decorated stucco ceilings. The panel doors are preserved. In the right front room is a polychrome marble chimney mantel.

Valuation

Mansion of architectural-historical and typological importance as a representative example of a mansion in a rich eclectic style. Main form, detailing, material and interior are well preserved. As part of a group of three mansions built in an architectural design, the property also has ensemble value.
