Inleiding
Herenhuis, dat het linkerdeel vormt van het bouwblok Burgemeester van Karnebeeklaan 6, 8 en 10. Het bouwblok werd in 1873 gebouwd in opdracht van Gerrit Henric Gijsbert Braam in eclectische bouwstijl, waarschijnlijk naar ontwerp van architect L.A. Brouwer.
Omschrijving
Herenhuis op rechthoekige plattegrond, bestaande uit een souterrain en drie bouwlagen onder een schilddak, drie vensterassen breed. De linkeras is als risaliet behandeld. De voorgevel is van baksteen; het souterrain is bekleed met hardsteen, versierd met sculpturale ornamentiek; de eerste bouwlaag bezit een gebosseerde bepleistering.
In het risalietgedeelte bevindt zich een porte-cochere, bestaande uit dubbele deuren met rijk houtsnijwerk in neo-Lodewijk XVI-stijl en een getoogd bovenlicht met sierpleisterwerk. Het balkon boven de porte-cochere wordt gedragen door twee hermen - menselijke figuren die van onderen in een pilaster overgaan -, ontleend aan de renaissance. Het balkon bezit een balusterbalustrade. Het risaliet wordt op de tweede en derde bouwlaag geflankeerd door pilasters met verdiepte velden en composiete kapitelen in classicistische stijl. De pilasters dragen het hoofdgestel van het risalietgedeelte.
De schuifvensters van de tweede bouwlaag bezitten een gepleisterde, geprofileerde omlijsting en een flauw gebogen hoofdgestel op voluutconsoles. De vensterbanken rusten eveneens op voluutconsoles, waartussen rechthoekige panelen met decoraties zijn aangebracht. De vensters worden verbonden door een geprofileerde cordonlijst. De derde bouwlaag is voorzien van stolpramen, met een gepleisterde, geprofileerde omlijsting, een sluitsteen en een lambrequin aan de onderzijde.
Het hoofdgestel bestaat uit een fries met rechthoekige panelen en festoenen in neo-Lodewijk XVI-stijl, een tandlijst en een kroonlijst op klossen.
Het interieur heeft grotendeels zijn oorspronkelijke structuur bewaard, ondanks het voor een deel weggetimmerde en verwijderde trappehuis ten behoeve van een doorgang naar nummer 8, en de verlaging van een aantal plafonds. De porte-cochere bezitgestucte muurpanelen, ten dele met ornamenten, gecanneleerde pilasters met Ionische kapitelen en stucplafonds in eclectische trant. De deuren in de porte-cochere bezitten segmentvormige frontons. Op de verhoogde eerste bouwlaag is een rijk geornamenteerde hal als verbindingsstuk tussen de lager gelegen porte-cochere en het voormalige trappehuis. Op de eerste en tweede bouwlaag zijn vier kamers met eclectische stucplafonds; op de tweede bouwlaag tevens een hal met stucplafond en deurbekroningen in de vorm van segmentvormige frontons - een daarvan met een siervaas en bloemmotieven in gepolychromeerd stucwerk -, alsmede aan de achterzijde een "spiegelzaal". Deze bevat betimmeringen, wandpanelen, aan de korte zijden door stucwerk omlijste spiegels, alsmede een rijk stucplafond. Onder een van de spiegels bevindt zich een zwart marmeren geetste schoorsteenmantel.
Waardering
Herenhuis van architectuurhistorisch en typologisch belang als representatief voorbeeld van een herenhuis in een rijke eclectische bouwstijl. Hoofdvorm, detaillering, materiaal en interieur zijn goed bewaard. Als onderdeel van een drietal in een architectonisch ontwerp gebouwde herenhuizen, heeft het pand tevens ensemblewaarde.

Description
Mansion on rectangular floor plan, consisting of a basement and three storeys under a hipped roof, three window bays wide. The left bay is treated as a risalit. The front facade is of brickwork; the basement is clad with ashlar stone, decorated with sculptural ornaments; the first storey has rusticated plasterwork.
In the risalit section is a porte-cochere, consisting of double doors with rich woodcarving in neo-Louis XVI style and an arched fanlight with decorative plasterwork. The balcony above the porte-cochere is supported by two herms - human figures that develop upwards from a pilaster -, derived from the Renaissance. The balcony has a baluster balustrade. The risalit is flanked on the second and third storeys by pilasters with recessed fields and composite capitals in classical style. The pilasters carry the main entablature of the risalit section.
The sash windows of the second storey have a plastered, moulded surround and a gently curved main entablature on volute consoles. The window sills likewise rest on volute consoles, between which rectangular panels with decorations are placed. The windows are connected by a moulded stringcourse. The third storey is equipped with casement windows, with a plastered, moulded surround, a keystone and a lambrequin at the bottom.
The main entablature consists of a frieze with rectangular panels and festoons in neo-Louis XVI style, a tooth moulding and a cornice on blocks.
The interior has largely retained its original structure, despite the staircase being partly boarded up and removed for a passageway to number 8, and the lowering of a number of ceilings. The porte-cochere has stuccoed wall panels, partly with ornaments, fluted pilasters with Ionic capitals and stucco ceilings in eclectic manner. The doors in the porte-cochere have segment-shaped pediments. On the raised first storey is a richly ornamented hall as a connecting piece between the lower-level porte-cochere and the former staircase. On the first and second storeys are four rooms with eclectic stucco ceilings; on the second storey also a hall with stucco ceiling and door pediments in the form of segment-shaped pediments - one of them with a decorative vase and flower motifs in polychromed stucco -, as well as at the rear a "mirror room". This contains panelling, wall panels, mirrors framed by stucco at the short sides, as well as a rich stucco ceiling. Under one of the mirrors is a black marble etched chimney piece.
Valuation
Mansion of architectural-historical and typological significance as a representative example of a mansion in a richly eclectic architectural style. Main form, detailing, material and interior are well preserved. As part of a group of three mansions built in a unified architectural design, the building also has ensemble value.
