Omschrijving

Description
HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. In the 17th and 18th centuries Backenhagen had a formal garden layout, of which several elements have been preserved. This formal layout is clearly shown on the map of the landholdings belonging to tot Twickel in the hamlet of Deldenerbroek by Johan Muller from c. 1728 and on the map from the Atlas Hottinger from 1783. These maps show the rectangular ditch complex, which was reworked in landscape style at the end of the 18th or beginning of the 19th century; only on the west side has the ditch retained its formal rectangular course.
Originally the drive was presumed to be on the east side of the park, as the Hottinger map and the Cadastral Draft Plan from c. 1830 show, and bordered on the north side a wooded complex. Originally this straight avenue, if it were not a sight axis, formed the main axis of the formal layout. The wooded complex, which covered cadastral parcels Municipality Ambt Delden nos. A1810, A1811, A1812 and A1813 and a broad strip to the south thereof, is still shown as such on the Topographic and Military map from 1916. A northwestern strip of this wood has been preserved. Before 1910 a new access drive was laid out, as shown by the Topographic and Military map from 1910. This new access drive, running in a generous curve, situated somewhat further south than the aforementioned formal drive, still exists as an access road to the farm Ter Weele and as a rear exit of Backenhagen. Of this road the straight section from the mentioned farm to the rear entrance of Backenhagen is worthy of protection. The main axis of the original formal layout was crossed by two transverse axes - likewise avenues. The map from the Atlas Hottinger shows only the eastern transverse axis, but on a later smaller-scale edition of this map from 1788 as well as on Muller's map both transverse axes are indicated. A reminder of the western transverse axis is formed by the straight wide ditch on the NW side of the country estate, which here forms the boundary of the historic layout and which flanked this former transverse axis on the outside. On the Topographic and Military map from 1916 the northern half of this avenue is still indicated, which ended at the Almelosestraat, which ran considerably further north at that time. Of the eastern avenue approximately the southern half has been preserved in the form of a ditched verge on both sides with partly single and partly double avenue planting (presently still oaks, c. 1900). The northern half of this avenue was felled before 1848, as it is not indicated on the Topographic and Military map from that year. However, this avenue is still largely recognizable on the Cadastral Draft Plan from c. 1830. The preserved avenue section served in the landscape-style park layout that came into being at the end of the 18th or beginning of the 19th century as a coulisse of views from the house and park onto the meadow to the west of this avenue. The oak avenue is now important as a reminder of the formal layout from a cultural-historical perspective and plays an important role as a coulisse of the view from the south side of the park over the meadow 'Hofweide'. This meadow itself falls outside the protected layout. In the corner of this avenue and the mentioned rear exit of Backenhagen a 19th-century tree group (presently still beech and oak), which forms part of the composition of the landscape-style park. The boundary of the historic layout on the south side is now marked by the landscape-style watercourse and by the semicircular ditch around the orchard of Backenhagen.
The current landscape-style park layout consists essentially of a late 18th-century or early 19th-century layout, which is visible on the Cadastral Draft Plan from c. 1830, and of a number of elements dating from the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Central to the layout the pond complex in landscape style, dating from before c. 1830, which runs in curves to the west and north of the house and connects to the ditches that surround the core of the park. Around the house and pond complex a walk via narrow winding paths over gently sloped terrain, which is adorned with evergreen shrubs and trees (presently rhododendrons, holly, conifers and softwood, 20th-century) and with deciduous wood (presently oak, beech, lime, acacia, 19th and 20th-century). Just south of the house an 18th or 19th-century lime and beech. North of these trees the ruin of the fortified farmhouse, which is preserved as a folly object in the park. This ruin overgrown with lilacs (place name: Seringenberg) is valuable as a romantic motif in the layout but as a building standing in itself it is now of subordinate importance for protection due to regular demolition and conversions. The ruin borders on the north side of a garden laid out around 1900 (place name: Rotstuin), which is constructed from slightly raised irregular sections surrounded by stones from the demolition of the old fortified farmhouse, in which evergreen shrubs are planted. From the ruin a view has been created over the pond complex onto the ornamental folly-like side facade of the 19th-century garden house. Before the Second World War this view was further enlivened by an ornamental bridge over the pond complex. The mentioned garden house stands on the west side of the semicircular orchard. It is not known whether this plan of the orchard is a remnant of the old formal layout or whether it is the result of an old subdivision pattern; such subdivision patterns derived from the circle are still recognizable in the surrounding landscape. The semicircular ground plan was directed straight at the south facade of the old fortified farmhouse, as shown by the Cadastral Draft Plan. Shortly after Antony August Dull had had the present house built, his brother, who was joint owner of Backenhagen, built the farm Perseverance in 1854 in the northern part of Backenhagen. From the Almelosestraat a drive led, which at that time led to the entrance then situated on the south side of Backenhagen house, first past this farm, as the mentioned Topographic and Military map from 1916 still shows. Perseverance was already separated from Backenhagen at the sale in 1905. The drive was relocated after the sale of Backenhagen in c. 1925, when also the northern and eastern part of the park layout was separated, and has since run in a gentle curve toward the present north entrance of Backenhagen house. The Topographic and Military map from 1848 shows that the course of the present drive roughly corresponds with the original drive on this side, as it appeared before the construction of Perseverance. Around 1910, when the then owner P. Smeenk had a tower built centrally on the north side of the house, the section of the drive from the pond on the north side to the house was straightened out. Smeenk furthermore had the present bridge placed over this section of the pond with pillars and wrought-iron fence.
From the house after c. 1925 the present view was created of the open space on the north side of the layout, which is articulated by the drive. The western space, which consists of a meadow with some tree groups and shrubs (presently beeches, 19th-century and rhododendrons, conifers from c. 1925) is terminated on the north side by a strip with conifers and rhododendrons, which forms the property boundary toward Perseverance. The narrow lawn strip on the east side of the drive is bordered on the east side by a park wood (mixed deciduous wood and holly, 20th-century), which forms the western flank of the already mentioned originally much larger wooded complex at this location. Shortly after the sale from c. 1925, the southeastern part of the wood was felled and reworked into meadow for the then-built farm Ter Weele; this meadow does not form part of the protected layout. The part of the park wood presently important for the historic layout is bounded on the SE side by the north side of cadastral parcels Ambt Delden nos. A1812 and A1813. The present road running in a curve through the wood to farm Ter Weele was also laid out after the sale in c. 1925. The park wood belonging to the historic layout presently ends on the south side at cadastral parcel Ambt Delden no. A1813. On the east side thereof the boundary is indicated by the mentioned drive to the farm Ter Weele, with the exception of a strip of wood on cadastral parcels Ambt Delden no. A1810 and no. A1811 and adjacent drive to Ter Weele; this strip of wood (in which drive) of 25 meters depth is an essential part of the historic layout for the appearance of the country estate from the Almelosestraat.
Furthermore, the landscape-style watercourse to the west of the mentioned meadow forms the boundary of the historic layout on the east side, until the rear exit of Backenhagen which stands at right angles to it.
In the nineteen-fifties of the 20th century the Almeslosestraat was relocated to its present course. The original curve, which this street made at the height of the entrance of Backenhagen, came to lie somewhat south of the new street line. This fragment of the original 'street' has since formed the striking drive of the country estate. The street section of this drive forms part of the protected layout. On the west side the east boundary of cadastral parcel Ambt Delden no. A1596 indicates the boundary of the historic layout with the exception of the section of the already mentioned broad ditch on the NW side of Backenhagen, which forms a valuable remnant of the formal layout.
