Omschrijving

Description
Built in 1932 by the Utrecht contractor Bredero on commission and to the design of Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964), a block of four dwellings constructed in brick and whitewashed, with the general characteristics of the Dutch contribution to the New Building movement from the period 1920-1940. Intended as a housing experiment for families with lower incomes.
Comprising two storeys, though according to the original design comprising three storeys, a flat-roofed block partly undercellared on a rectangular ground plan.
Internally employing the core-unit concept.
A half-undercellared flat-roofed block on a rectangular ground plan, composed of largely whitewashed plastered load-bearing brick walls and wooden beams. In front and rear facades, series of windows set in wooden frames, with a certain regularity and according to determined mutual proportions: the side facades largely blank. On the division of ground floor and first storey at the front on the left corner a small continuous balcony, edged with a lattice railing and with on the division of the residential units windscreens of reinforced glass.
The dwellings accessible by means of a recessed front door preceded by a brick step of three treads and a kitchen door with a like step at the rear; the cellar space accessible both internally and externally via stairs. Internally significant is the concept of the core-unit: the concentration of in principle prefabricated utility spaces such as kitchen, hall, toilet, stair, etc., in this case however only realised in the form of a space accessible via the stair midway between ground floor and first storey, in which are housed bathroom and toilet room; and, where still present, the sliding partitions which allow for variable division of the space.
A block of four residential houses, which due to the overall architectural (the use of much glass and a light colour scheme), and the typological design (the application of the core-unit concept and variable space division by means of sliding partitions) and the purpose for which the block was designed and executed (namely housing for families with lower incomes), is of significance for both exterior and interior as a representative example of the Dutch contribution to the New Building movement from the period 1920-1940, and is of general importance because of its significance for the development of modern Dutch architecture.
