Introduction

SLUICE LOCK constructed in 1878 to improve the Kolonievaart to Veenhuizen dug in 1823. In connection with the waterway to the Norgerstraat, a new course was laid out slightly south of the old route. The plans were developed by the Chief Engineer of Rijkswaterstaat J. Strootman. In addition to the lock, a revolving bridge, now disappeared, was also designed. The cast-iron and wrought-iron moving works were manufactured by the foundry G.J. Wispelwey & Co. from Zwolle. The lock, which is known as the Koloniesluis, is now in use as a weir. Description

Sober and functionally executed lock with oval chamber. The lock walls and the connection with the bank are built from basalt blocks and, like the lock heads, finished with natural stone coping plates. The brick lock heads with shutter bar grooves accommodate the cast-iron and wrought-iron moving works and the sheet-iron lock gates. On the lock gates are moving works for the sluices. Braking works are installed on either side of the lock.
