Inleiding

Introduction

The RESIDENTIAL HOUSE 'De Eerste Steen' was built in 1906-1907 as a "forest cottage" for H.J. Oosting according to a design by Asser architect G. Stel. The original design shows that the house originally had no roof tower and that the avant-corps was terminated by an attic balustrade. The detached country house in transitional style is beautifully situated in a leafy setting.

Description

The building is constructed from a rectangular floor plan in white painted brick with black painted plinth and likewise painted, ox-blood-coloured accents. The single-storey house has a gabled roof covered with tiles with a large wooden roof tower, which is not indicated on the design drawing. The roof tower is furnished with a round-arch window on the front and rear, double round-arch dormer windows on all sides and a projecting, constricted spire which is covered with zinc shingles. The house has a symmetrical front facade with glazing bars in the fanlights of the right-angled facade openings. In the centre there is a slightly higher rising avant-corps with bevelled sides. This forms part of a room which is located above a basement and whose floor is one metre above the floor level of the other rooms. The basement is furnished with horizontal windows and has around it a wooden boarding functioning as a terrace with round arches between posts, on which stands a balustrade of wooden round arches. The front staircase was not part of the original design. The avant-corps has on the front a porte brisée opening onto the boarding and on both sides a window, of which the left is furnished with shutters. These right-angled facade openings stand under stretches and a continuous band with dentil list. The projection is terminated by a moulded gutter list resting on corbels, on which originally stood an attic balustrade. The windows with shutters in the outer bays stand under round arches in slightly lower gable sections with dentil list as on the avant-corps. The right side facade is furnished with a window under round arch, a new entrance under the round arch of a missing window and a non-original right-angled window to the right of the entrance. The rear has two extensions running through from the roof with between them a recessed gable section with non-original, right-angled window with glazing bars and a higher lying stretch in the gable as a remnant of a missing window. The other facade openings in the rear gable are also non-original. The left side facade has on the ground floor a window and a porte brisée towards a tiled terrace. The brick in the top of the pointed gable differs from the other, which could be caused by an alteration. At the beginning of the drive stand brick gate posts with buttresses and the name of the house in tiles of Bentheimer sandstone.

Assessment

The characteristic house, standing in a leafy setting, is a visually defining object that integrates beautifully into the setting with particularly landscape value.
