The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

The RESIDENTIAL HOUSE was built according to a design by architect T. de Haan dating from 1934 and was executed by contractors Brouwer and Van Dalen. The detached small country house 'De Pauw' was built in a plastic style related to the Amsterdam School with cottage style influences. The house is provided with a monumental roof and stands with three other properties built in a similar style in the district Oud-Zuid, where in particular the residential house architecture built by the architect from the interwar period is well represented.

Description.

The small country house is built in yellow brick on a foundation of clinkers, from a cruciform floor plan. The single-storey house has a complex, convexly vaulted, reed-thatched cantilever roof, the flat upper parts of which are covered with somewhat incongruous zinc plates. The front elevation shows a strongly projecting, rounded avant-corps. This rounding is provided with a window section divided into five parts with leaded lights. The underside of the roof overhangs the facades, which thereby seem to have a very limited height. The roof is provided on the front with a recessed opening with a window section divided into four parts. In the right facade, between the projection and the transverse wing, is the entrance. This is an arched door under a canopy resting on a curved corbel, which also covers the rectangular extension (toilet) with boarded upper part to the left of the door. The side wing, which on the original design drawing is shorter with a steeper roof line, has small rectangular windows and a gable end which, like the gable end on the left side, is provided from the eaves with pot-banked boarding. The large, rectangular extension with steeply rising, largely pot-banked wooden superstructure on the rear was originally no more than a low extension (barn) with flat roof. The left side facade has a different appearance on the original design drawing than the current one. The extension originally designed as a conservatory with flat roof ultimately became a covered side wing with a double-angled ground floor, which between the foundation and the boarding is entirely filled with a corner-wrapping, five-window window section.

Valuation

The house has architectural historical value as a particularly fine example of interwar residential house architecture with a very characteristic design executed in a specific building style, in which the emphasis lies on the unusual roof form. As part of a cluster of stylistically related properties with thatched roofs, in an area where much valuable interwar architecture is located, the prominent small country house also has great ensemble value.
