Inleiding
Het ca. 1890 in een sobere laat-eclectische trant gebouwde WOONHUIS staat in een omgeving waarvan het aanzien wordt bepaald door rond de eeuwwisseling voor de gegoede burgerij en welvarende middenstand gebouwde woonhuizen. Omschrijving
Het oorspronkelijk vanuit een rechthoekige plattegrond opgetrokken herenhuis heeft een verdieping met entablement onder een met tuiles du nord gedekt, afgeknot schilddak. Het heeft een symmetrische, vijf-assige voorgevel met ventilatieroostertjes in de gepleisterde plint, brede, eveneens over de zijgevels doorgetrokken cordonlijst met liggende cartouches met rolwerk tussen de vensters en een middenrisaliet. De schuifvensters zijn rechtgesloten onder segmentbogen met sluit- en aanzetstenen en boogtrommels met gestileerde florale lijndecoraties. De entreepartij in het middenrisaliet bestaat uit een paneeldeur met stolpnaald en bovenlicht tussen gecanneleerde pilasters op hardstenen basementen. Boven de deur bevindt zich een rondboogfries en een houten balkon met geprofileerde voetplaat en eenvoudige houten balustrade, waarop een porte brisée met bovenlicht uitkomt. De gevel wordt beëindigd door een verkropt entablement met spaarveldjes tussen de consoles en de geprofileerde kroonlijst. De rechter gevel is blind en wordt slechts verlevendigd door de cordonlijst, het entablement en enkele staafankers. De achtergevel is ook voorzien van staafankers, alsmede een porte brisée en drie rechtgesloten vensters onder strekken. De uitbouw met plat is iets lager, evenals het hiermee verbonden verdiepingloze gedeelte onder met gesmoorde tuiles du nord gedekt schilddak. The originally rectangular ground plan townhouse has one storey with entablature under a hipped roof covered with tuiles du nord. It has a symmetrical, five-bay front facade with ventilation grilles in the rendered plinth, broad string course also running across the side facades with reclining cartouches with scrollwork between the windows and a central pavilion. The sash windows are straight-headed under segmental arches with voussoirs and arch rings with stylised floral line decorations. The entrance arrangement in the central pavilion consists of a panelled door with a fanlight between fluted pilasters on stone bases. Above the door is a round-arch frieze and a wooden balcony with moulded base plate and simple wooden balustrade, onto which a French window with fanlight opens. The facade is concluded by an entablature with spare panels between the consoles and the moulded cornice. The right gable is blank and is only enlivened by the string course, the entablature and several wall anchors. The rear facade is also provided with wall anchors, as well as a French window and three straight-headed windows under lintels. The extension with flat roof is slightly lower, as is the connected single-storey section under a hipped roof covered with tuiles du nord. These are probably both added during an alteration dating from 1912. In the left side facade are two windows per storey as in the front facade.
Valuation
The characteristic building, in relatively good condition, stands amongst various listed buildings in the old heart of the city. Due to its location, the characteristic building has considerable group value. The house is also part of the protected townscape of Assen.
