Inleiding
Het in het centrum van de stad staande, in 1870 gebouwde herenhuis is een goed voorbeeld van representatieve, voor de bouwtijd zeer karakteristieke woonhuisarchitectuur in een tamelijk ingetogen eclectische bouwstijl, waarin de versiering aan de gevel is beperkt tot omlijstingen met kuiven rondom gevelopeningen.
Omschrijving
Pand met een vanuit een rechthoekige plattegrond opgetrokken hoofdvorm. Het huis heeft een verdieping onder een met platte Friese pannen gedekt dubbel schilddak met hoog liggende zakgoot en een grote bakstenen dakkapel. De symmetrische, vijf-assige voorgevel heeft een gepleisterde plint met vierkante ventilatieroostertjes, hoeklisenen en vensters met profiellijst, terracotta kuif en bovenramen met afgeronde bovenhoeken en glas-in-lood invulling. De vensters in beide bouwlagen zijn vrijwel identiek, maar iets minder hoog op de verdieping. De entree bestaat uit een bordes met ijzeren balustrade en hardstenen stoep met daarboven een paneeldeur onder bovenlicht met afgeronde bovenhoek en glas-in-lood invulling. De deur heeft een omlijsting van pilasters op hardstenen poeren en een entablement met het opschrift "notariskantoor" in het fries. De gevel wordt beëindigd door een entablement dat is verkropt om de hoeklisenen, waar ze bovendien zijn voorzien van consoles en tandlijst, details die identiek zijn aan die aan het eveneens beschermde pand Oostersingel 3,5. The house has one storey above ground under a hipped roof covered with flat Frisian tiles, with high-set rainwater channel and a large brick roof dormer. The symmetrical, five-bay front facade has a plastered plinth with square ventilation grilles, corner pilasters and windows with profile moulding, terracotta drip moulding and fanlights with rounded top corners and leaded glass infill. The windows in both storeys are virtually identical, but slightly lower on the upper storey. The entrance consists of a stoop with iron balustrade and hardstone step with above it a panelled door under a fanlight with rounded top corner and leaded glass infill. The door has a surround of pilasters on hardstone piers and an entablature with the inscription "notariskantoor" in the frieze. The facade is terminated by an entablature which is broken around the corner pilasters, where they are moreover provided with consoles and dentil moulding, details which are identical to those on the likewise protected property Oostersingel 3,5. The front roof slope is provided with a large brick roof dormer with corner pilasters under a flat roof. The dormer is provided with two T-windows with profile moulding with drip moulding and fanlights with leaded glass infill and rounded top corners and has a termination in the form of an entablature which is broken around corner pilasters with dentil moulding. On the right side facade (with roof dormer) the house is connected to the adjoining property by means of a wooden connecting element. The left side facade has two windows per storey and corner pilasters as in the front facade. The wooden roof dormer on this side was presumably added later. The facade openings in the rear facade likewise have rounded top corners but lack the moulding. In the middle of the upper storey is a folding door (porte brisée) opening onto a flat roof, to the left of which is a cast iron louvre window opening to the side.
Valuation
The house is a fairly intact and representative example of residential architecture for the better-off in a building style very characteristic of its building period. The landmark property stands in an area in which much has been preserved from the late nineteenth-century situation, whereby the ensemble value is also evident.
