The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

The double DWELLING HOUSE built around 1870, standing in the centre of the city, is a good example of representative residential architecture very characteristic of its building period in a fairly restrained eclectic building style, where decoration on the facades is limited to mouldings with drip mouldings around the facade openings. The protection applies both to the house and to the associated coach house. The extension on the street side from around 1925 falls outside the protection.

Description

A townhouse with one storey above ground, erected from a rectangular floor plan, under a hipped roof covered with tiles, with chimney stacks on all four ridge ends and an original wooden roof dormer with pediment in the front roof slope. The six-bay-wide front facade with central risalite and corner pilasters is provided with a plastered plinth and a stone-clad band course extending down to the window sills of the ground floor windows. The doors and windows, which are slightly higher on the ground floor than on the upper storey, are decorated with a terracotta drip moulding on the profile mouldings and provided with window frames with rounded corners and arched fanlights. The entrance section consists of two coupled entrance openings with panelled double doors with fluted jambs, iron frame bars with monogram, calf with egg moulding and a step, thresholds and piers of hardstone. The windows above the entrance are likewise coupled. The facade is terminated by a broken entablature which on the cornices of the risalite and the pilasters is provided with consoles and dentil moulding, details that are identical to those on the likewise protected property Noordersingel 45. The rear facade and the side facades are built of a different type of stone. The right side facade has two arched windows on the ground floor. A third facade opening in this storey has been bricked up. On the upper storey stood identical windows directly above the ground floor windows, but these have been replaced by a wide window arrangement with three likewise arched, coupled windows. The small square window here to the right of it has been added. On the rear facade there is a somewhat lower-rising extension under a hipped roof. This building component is provided with various arched and square-headed facade openings with glazing bars. The left side facade has a window at the front on the upper storey as in the front facade, but without drip moulding. The other two windows are as those in the right side facade. This side facade is concealed on the ground floor behind a volume built around 1925 with a high cornice-topped facade and gabled roof (which is not protected). It is placed in front of the presumably former coach house which has a saddle/hipped roof covered with corrugated Frisian tiles. The coach house has a spout gable at the front, in which a loft window with profile moulding and drip moulding has been placed. The facade has been widened above corbels and the gable top is provided with a drip moulding and a spout, on which a pediment and an obelisk have been placed. At the height of the corbels, a frieze with diamond-headed ornaments runs across the facades. The side facades are terminated by a profiled drip moulding. The coach house has two folding doors (porte brisees) at the rear, which open onto a terrace.

Valuation

The house is a fairly intact and representative example of residential architecture for the better-off in a building style very characteristic of its building period. The landmark property stands in an area in which much has been preserved from the late nineteenth-century situation, whereby the ensemble value is also evident. The house is moreover part of the protected townscape.
