Inleiding
BUREEL annex GYMNASTIEKGEBOUW. Het op het terrein van de Johan Willem Friso kazerne gelegen pand is gebouwd omstreeks 1910 en staat op de oorspronkelijke middenas van het kazerneterrein, tussen en achter de kazernegebouwen de 'Wilhelmina' en de 'Emma' en in het verlengde van de schildwachthuisjes, die oorspronkelijk de hoofdentree tot het kazerneterrein markeerden. Het gebouw wordt gekenmerkt door een vrij sobere vormgeving en verwijst door het gebruik van geblokte lisenen naar de overigens rijker versierde kazernegebouwen 'Wilhelmina', 'Emma' en 'Hendrik'.
Omschrijving.
De rechthoekige hoofvolume is opgetrokken in donkere baksteen vanuit een rechthoekige plattegrond en telt twee bouwlagen onder met bouletpannen gedekte afgeknotte schilddaken. De symmetrisch ingedeelde gevels bezitten hardstenen plinten, hoeklisenen (met blokverdeling op de begane grond) geprofileerde gootlijsten en getoogde zesruitsvensters voorzien van hardstenen onderdorpels en aanzet- en sluitstenen in segmentbogen in de eerste en in strekken in de tweede bouwlaag. De acht traveeën brede voorgevel heeft een hoger opgaande middenpartij met een derde bouwlaag onder afgeknot schilddak, waarin twee rechtgesloten vensters staan. De cordonlijst is van Bentheimer zandsteen. In de linker travee staat een niet- originele deur met bovenlicht. Het venster in de rechter, per bouwlaag slechts een venster tellende zijgevel, is laag geplaatst. De bouwdelen aan de achterzijde hebben platte daken. De vensters in de vijf-assige achtergevel zijn op de begane grond getoogd en voorzien van verblendstenen segmentbogen. De verdieping is later toegevoegd, evenals de verdiepingloze delen aan weerszijden. De drie vensters per bouwlaag in de linker zijgevel zijn als die in de voorgevel.
Waardering
Gezien vanaf de Vaart heeft het karakteristieke pand vooral ensemblewaarde door de centrale situering in de oorspronkelijke middenas van het kazerneterrein en het feit dat de architectonische vormgeving de architectuur van de kazernegebouwen versterkt. Voorts is het gebouw een beeldbepalend onderdeel van het kazernecomplex en is het van belang voor de culturele en de sociaaleconomische geschiedenis van Assen als garnizoensstad. OFFICE BUILDING COMBINED WITH GYMNASIUM. The building located on the grounds of the Johan Willem Friso barracks was built around 1910 and stands on the original central axis of the barracks site, between and behind the barracks buildings 'Wilhelmina' and 'Emma' and in line with the guard houses, which originally marked the main entrance to the barracks grounds. Description.
The rectangular main volume is constructed in dark brick from a rectangular floor plan and has two storeys under truncated hipped roofs covered with boulet tiles. The symmetrically arranged facades have hard-stone plinths, corner pilasters (with block division on the ground floor) profiled guttering and arched six-pane windows provided with hard-stone sills and setting- and closing-stones in segmental arches on the first storey and in courses on the second storey. The eight-bay wide front facade has a taller central section with a third storey under truncated hipped roof, in which two straight-topped windows stand. The cornice is of Bentheimer sandstone. In the left bay stands a non-original door with fanlight. The window in the right side facade, which has only one window per storey, is placed low. The building sections at the rear have flat roofs. The windows in the five-axis rear facade are arched on the ground floor and provided with facing-brick segmental arches. The storey was added later, as were the single-storey sections on either side. The three windows per storey in the left side facade are as those on the front facade.
Valuation
Seen from the Vaart, the characteristic building has particular ensemble value due to its central position on the original central axis of the barracks site and the fact that the architectural design reinforces the architecture of the barracks buildings.
