Inleiding
KAZERNEGEBOUW 'HENDRIK', voorheen geadresseerd Vaart ZZ 163;165 en gelegen op het terrein van de Johan Willem Friso kazerne. Het eerste gebouw dat op dit terrein is (de voormalige 'Klapkampen' tussen de Witterstraat en de Vaart ZZ) werd aangelegd is het van 1893 daterende in neo-renaissance stijl opgetrokken legeringsgebouw 'Wilhelmina'. In 1895 (1894 volgens de datumsteen) verrees rechts hiervan de vrijwel identiek vormgegeven 'Emma'. De kleinere 'HENDRIK' werd in dezelfde stijl en met dezelfde detaillering gebouwd in 1905 (1904 volgens de datumsteen).
Omschrijving.
De 'Hendrik' is slechts 29 traveeën breed. De risalerende verblendstenen middenpartij is identiek aan die van de kazernegebouwen de 'Wilhelmina' en de 'Emma' en heeft in de boogtrommel boven het balkon in het centrale deel van de façade eveneens een zanstenen reliëf met het wapen van Nederland en het opschrift 'Hendrik kazerne'. De gevelpartijen aan weerszijden zijn van baksteen. De buitenste tuitgevels worden geflankeerd door respectievelijk een en drie traveeen brede geveldelen. De linker (oostelijke) kopgevel is als de naar elkaar gekeerde kopgevels van de beide andere gebouwen. De rechter (westelijke) kopgevel is blind en is als alle andere kopgevels voorzien van hoektorentjes met kantelen en een brede middenliseen. De gevel is vergelijkbaar met de oostelijke kopgevel van de 'Wilhelmina'. De 'Hendrik' bezit aan de achterzijde twee dwarsvleugels met verdieping onder zadeldak. De gevels zijn voorzien van zesruits-vensters, die zijn getoogd op de begane grond en rechtgesloten onder verblendstenen strekken op de verdieping. De vensters staan in groepen van vier maal drie en een maal twee vensters per bouwlaag tussen lisenen met zandstenen kopjes. De lisenen zijn geblokt op de begane grond en vlak op de verdieping. De iets kortere westelijke vleugel heeft een kopgevel met bogen en spaarvelden als in de andere kopgevels. De langere oostelijke vleugel heeft een vlakke kopgevel. De uitkragingen van de daken boven de kopgevels zijn voorzien van voorschot met makelaar en houten hangstijlen. Zie voor de overige kenmerken de uitvoerige omschrijving van de 'Wilhelmina.
Waardering
Het zeer karakteristieke kazernegebouw 'Hendrik ' is van grote architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de relatieve gaafheid, het materiaalgebruik, de stilistische zuiverheid en typologische zeldzaamheid. Het beeldbepalende gebouw is tevens van waarde voor de sociaal-economische geschiedenis en de historie van Assen als garnizoensstad. De 'Hendrik' vormt samen met de 'Wilhelmina' en de 'Emma', het bureel annex gymnastiekgebouw en de hekken met schildwachthuisjes aan Vaartzijde een bijzonder complex met een evidente samenhang tussen de diverse complexonderdelen, waardoor ook de ensemblewaarde groot is. BARRACK BUILDING 'HENDRIK', formerly addressed Vaart ZZ 163;165 and located on the grounds of the Johan Willem Friso barracks. The first building erected on this site (the former 'Klapkampen' between the Witterstraat and the Vaart ZZ) is the barracks building 'Wilhelmina' dating from 1893, constructed in neo-Renaissance style. The windows stand in groups of four by three and one by two windows per storey between pilasters with sandstone capitals. The pilasters are blocked on the ground floor and flat on the storey. The slightly shorter western wing has an end gable with arches and spandrels as in the other end gables. The longer eastern wing has a flat end gable. Valuation
The highly characteristic barracks building 'Hendrik' is of great architectural-historical value due to its relative integrity, material use, stylistic purity and typological rarity. The dominant building is also of value for socio-economic history and the history of Assen as a garrison town. The 'Hendrik' forms together with the 'Wilhelmina' and the 'Emma', the office building combined with gymnasium and the gates with guard houses on the Vaart side a particularly distinctive complex with evident coherence between the various complex components, which gives it great ensemble value as well.
