The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

The RESIDENTIAL HOUSE built in 1876 is designed in a distinctive manner in an eclectic style with influences from Gothic (perpendicular style) and chalet style. The detached house stands at an angle to the street, oriented towards the T-junction where the Van der Feltzpark opens onto the Nassaulaan. The house is one of many nineteenth and early twentieth century residential houses for the wealthy Asser citizens in the "palaces district" and is part of the protected townscape. The house distinguishes itself from the other buildings in the immediate vicinity because of the extraordinary, refined detailing and use of materials.

Description.

The building erected from an L-shaped floor plan has two storeys under bituminous roof covering, overhanging gabled roofs with wind braces. The facades, partly rendered, are cream-coloured and provided with grey plinths and bright ochre-coloured accents. The most representative facade is that facing the Van der Feltzpark. This is three-bayed and has a symmetrical layout with a broad central risalit, against which an almost equally broad conservatory has been built. The conservatory has a substructure that is partly rendered in brick and partly in wood and is provided with basements with casements. On the basements stand octagonal, cast-iron columns with composite capitals. These form the bases of the profiled Tudor arches and the round arches between them, which, like the surrounding spandrels, are filled with leaded glass. The conservatory is terminated by a cornice around the flat roof, which is provided with basements functioning as corner balusters (like those of the conservatory), between which wooden railings with four-leaf quatrefoils stand. On the flat roof a double porte brisée with round-arch fanlight emerges. They are provided with mouldings and stand under a spanning arch with a filling of a profiled circle and three-sided arch mouldings in the spandrels. The gable top is provided with a round oculus with diagonal cross-glazing and a gable termination in the form of a broken entablature with casements. The portes brisées are covered by the projection of the roof truss. This rests on round columns with composite capitals, which are aligned with the columns in the conservatory. The paired columns are connected at the front to each other by round arches with a filling of wooden openwork and by a three-leaf arch on both sides. Both side bays are provided on the ground floor with windows with carried-through lintels under Tudor arch, of which the carved woodwork in the upper sashes forms irregular Tudor arches. The windows have a moulding which is crowned by a hood. The windows on the upper floor are round-arched with arch tracery in the fanlights and like the windows on the ground floor provided with moulding and rendered reveal with circles below the windows. The outlined gable fields around the windows are provided with false joints. On both sides stand bundles of three columns with composite capital. The entablatures largely lie under the outhanging roof edges supported on open-worked clamps, of which the right is provided with a twisted wooden "rail". The left gable end is only rendered under the carried-through lintel and around the windows, which are entirely executed as the windows in the side bays of the front facade, but here are also furnished with Venetian blinds. In the gable top stands a round oculus, similar to that in the front facade. On the rear facade, to the left rear, is an extension under a flat roof, to which a part was added in 1927. In the unrendered rear facade, changes were probably made in the same year in the arrangement of the facade, in which part of the windows were added. In the gable top of the projecting left section stands a round oculus, which can be compared with those in the other facades. The facade on the Nassaulaan consists of a higher risalit and a lower set-back section with, among other things, a foundation stone on which the year 1876 and the name P.B. Westerhuis are noted. The risalit is provided on the ground floor with two coupled windows (as on the ground floor in the front facade) with a narrow, profiled pendant and stand within a moulding with rounded corners. The windows on the upper floor are, like the surrounds, formed as the portes brisées in the front facade. Also in this gable top stands a round oculus. Between the windows of both storeys was originally a balcony. The right gable section contains the entrance, which consists of a panelled double door with cast-iron frame ironwork, a profiled calf and a Tudor-arch shaped fanlight with leaded glass filling and hood crown. The windows here to the right are likewise equal to those on the ground floor in the front facade. Above the ground floor are three horizontal windows within mouldings with rounded corners. The facade is terminated by a broad entablature with profiled bands and mouldings. The chimney stack on this building section is rendered and covered. To the right stands at an angle on the corner a garage of fair-faced brick built in 1924 with a flat roof and double garage doors. However, this is an addition of secondary importance.

Valuation

The characteristic house is a particularly fine and well-preserved example of eclectic residential house architecture for the wealthy citizens. The villa, situated in an important location and defining the townscape, is a striking feature in the "palaces district", where many valuable nineteenth and early twentieth century representative residential houses are concentrated, which means that the urban planning and ensemble value of the building is considerable. The house is also part of the protected townscape of Assen.
