Inleiding
Het ca. 1890 gebouwde WOONHUIS is een mooi voorbeeld van een huis met verdieping van het zogenaamde Asser type, dat wordt gekenmerkt door een hoog opgaande middenpartij. Het betreft een van de grotere van de vele waardevolle, voor de gegoede burgerij gebouwde panden aan de Vaart. Als zodanig is het representatief voor de groeiende welstand van vele Assenaren, die kan worden gerelateerd aan de snelle ontwikkeling van hun stad in de negentiende eeuw.
Omschrijving. Het vanuit een rechthoekige plattegrond opgetrokken huis telt twee, deels drie bouwlagen onder een met tuiles du nord gedekt schilddak en een plat steekdak. De symmetrische, vijf traveeën brede voorgevel van schone baksteen heeft een hardstenen plint, getoogde vensters onder strekken (eerste en tweede bouwlaag), een geprononceerde middentravee en een entablement met geprofileerde gootlijst, die ook de andere gevels beëindigt. De middentravee is voorzien van een entreepartij die bestaat uit een hardstenen stoep voor een paneel-vleugeldeur met gecanneleerde stolpnaald, geprofileerd kalf en getoogd bovenlicht met imitatie glas-in-lood, alsmede een gesneden bovenrand binnen een omlijsting van op hardstenen poeren staande houten pilasters met casement. Boven de entree staat een op consoles rustende erker met geprofileerde onderlijst, houten borstwering met panelen en getoogde vensters. De erker draagt een balkon met geprofileerde onderlijst en houten balustrade. Hierop komt een porte brisée uit, die evenals de beide vensters in deze bouwlaag rechtgesloten is en wordt afgesloten door een rollaag. De hardstenen stoep heeft aan weerszijden een plaveisel van gele baksteen en een erfscheiding van ronde stoeppalen met kettingen. Zowel de linker als de rechter zijgevel zijn gepleisterd en voorzien van schijnvoegen. De oorspronkelijke indeling van de westelijke zijgevel is gewijzigd bij een verbouwing in 1908 voor de toenmalige eigenaar van het huis mr. E. Pelinck. De eveneens gepleisterde achtergevel bezit een grote dakkapel met plat dak.
Waardering
Het karakteristieke huis (met stoeppalen met kettingen) is van architectuurhistorische waarde als een mooi en gaaf voorbeeld van laat negentiende eeuwse woonhuisarchitectuur voor de gegoede burgerij. Het beeldbepalende pand maakt deel uit van de waardevolle, voornamelijk negentiende en vroeg-twintigste eeuwse bebouwing aan de Vaart en heeft derhalve grote ensemblewaarde. The RESIDENTIAL HOUSE built c. 1890 is a fine example of a house with an upper storey of the so-called Asser type, which is characterized by a high-rising central section. It is one of the larger of the many valuable buildings built for the well-to-do citizens on the Vaart. As such it is representative of the growing prosperity of many inhabitants of Assen, which can be related to the rapid development of their city in the nineteenth century.
Description. The house, erected from a rectangular ground plan, has two, in places three storeys under a hipped roof covered with French tiles and a flat roof. The symmetrical, five-bay-wide front facade of fine brickwork has a sandstone plinth, arched windows under stretch (first and second storey), a pronounced central bay and an entablature with profiled gutter moulding, which also terminates the other facades. The central bay is provided with an entrance section consisting of a sandstone stoep in front of a panel-wing door with fluted pedestal, profiled calf and arched fanlight with imitation stained glass, as well as a carved upper border within a surround of wooden pilasters standing on sandstone piers with casement. Above the entrance stands a canted bay on corbels with profiled lower moulding, wooden breast railing with panels and arched windows. The bay carries a balcony with profiled lower moulding and wooden balustrade. A porte brisée opens onto this, which like the two windows in this storey is rectangular and is closed off by a rolling shutter. The sandstone stoep has paving of yellow brick on either side and a boundary fence of round bollards with chains. Both the left and the right side facades are rendered and provided with false jointing. The original layout of the western side facade was altered during a renovation in 1908 for the then owner of the house Mr. E. Pelinck. The also rendered rear facade has a large dormer with a flat roof.
Valuation
The characteristic house (with bollards with chains) is of architectural-historical value as a fine and intact example of late nineteenth-century residential architecture for the well-to-do citizens. The eye-catching building is part of the valuable, predominantly nineteenth- and early twentieth-century development on the Vaart and therefore has considerable ensemble value. The house is also part of the protected townscape Assen.
